“Oh no! It’s already filled!” During registration week, you’ll find SMU students glued to their computer screens, anxiously watching their classes fill spot by spot until it’s their turn to enroll. Registering is all about strategy and preparation. Don’t worry collegiates, hercampus has got you covered whether you’re trying to avoid a dreaded 8 a.m. or finally get into EE.

  1. The first step in the registration process is doing your background research. If you’re unsure about your major, go to the Hegi Career Center and take a personality test. Scroll through your course catalog to see if anything appeals to you. Talk to older students in your major about good teachers and classes. The more information you get, the more options you’ll have when choosing classes.
  2. The second step is speaking with your advisor. Although everybody complains about his or hers, they’re honestly the best resource available to you. Go to your appointment prepared with questions and possible class ideas, and you’ll get a lot more out of your time. If you cultivate a good relationship with your advisor, it’ll be easier to talk about serious issues later on, like dropping a class.  If you don’t like your advisor, don’t worry, it’s very possible to switch!
  3. The third step is logging on to ratemyprofessor.com. Look up all the possible professors you could be taking and rearrange your schedule accordingly. Professors can make or break a class experience and often effect what you choose as a major. Having great teachers is critical to having a successful semester.
  4. The fourth step is assembling your mock schedule. Put together your desired classes and desired professors to see what works. Students often wait until they’re registering to do this, and find both classes they want are at the same time. You’ll probably have to sacrifice a time or a teacher you want, but it’s better to know before you’re enrolling. You should also have a back up plan or alternatives if one of your classes is filled.
  5. The fifth step is registering. Hooray! Make sure you have great Internet connection and get to work. Register for the most popular or crucial classes first and then move on to your electives.
  6. Yes, there is a sixth step. What happens if you didn’t get into a class? Be persistent. Over Christmas break and the beginning of the semester check the class daily, people will switch their schedules around and classes will open up. Email the professor. They can add you to the class, if they refuse. Come the first day and see if there are any no shows, you’ll most likely be able to get in.
