The five essential college theme party pieces

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Welcome to college. It’s the best four years of your life and the only time when you can walk into a party wearing the most outlandish, insane outfit imaginable and people are jealous. Theme parties are a way of life as an undergrad. You choose the party with the best theme. Who cares about the fraternity or the venue, you just want to wear the cutest outfit. Creating the perfect collection of theme party clothes can be hard, and expensive. Skip the stress and collect a few key pieces that you can use for the rest of your time in college.

Oversized mens white button down

Don’t laugh, you will need this. Every year a fraternity throws a “Risky Business” or “Morning After” themed party. For these two themes the easiest thing to do is have your own oversized shirt so you don’t have to ask the guys on your hall for one to borrow.

Camouflage

There are a number of parties where you can pull out a camo top or skirt and go. America themed parties or “Seal Team 6” parties are just two of the times where camo will come in handy.

Schoolgirl skirt

Waiting until my junior year to get a plaid skirt was probably one of my biggest regrets in college. “Schoolgirl,” “High School Stereotypes” and “Mathletes and Athletes” are all themes where a plaid schoolgirl skirt can come in really handy.

Animal ears

If you only listen to one thing, this needs to be it. Animal ears are the key to a successful theme party career. Halloween,  “Safari” and “Jungle” are just a few themes where animal ears will come in clutch.

Neon

Neon leggings are the best in this category. “Tight and Bright” and rave parties are two instances when neon leggings are absolutely necessary. 80’s parties, especially “Aspen in the 80’s” is a great occasion to bust out the neon leggings.
