7 Recent Sports Moments That Will Make You Seem Like You Know About Sports

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Picture this: you’re talking to a really cute guy. You’re trying to impress him with the vast amount of sports knowledge you have at your disposal, but then you remember…you know absolutely nothing about sports. Well, here is a list of recent sports moments to keep in your back pocket so you can convincingly fake some knowledge of the game.

1. SMU Lost To Memphis 51-7

Kicking off our list with something close to home, our dear Mustangs suffered a pretty brutal loss against Memphis on Saturday. The final score was 51-7, breaking SMU’s two game winning streak. After crushing University of Houston 38 to 16 and Tulane 35 to 31, the Mustangs were confident going into their homecoming game. Sadly, they could not pull out a win this weekend, but hopefully their luck is better against East Carolina on November 12.

2. Chicago Cubs Win The World Series After 108 years

Probably the most notable sports moment on our list is the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series on November 2, 2016. After their 108-year championship drought, the Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians with an 8-7, 10-inning victory, which lasted from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

3. New York Marathon Sees Its Youngest Winner Ever

Just this morning, Eritrean Ghirmay Ghebreslassie became the youngest men’s winner in the history of the New York Marathon, at just 20 years old. On the women’s side, Kenya’s Mary Keitany won the race for the third straight time, making her the second woman to win it three times in a row, along with Norwegian runner Grete Waitz.

4. 2016 NCAA College Football Rankings Are Here

The first college championship poll for the season came out this week, ranking Alabama at number one, followed by Michigan, Clemson and Washington, respectively. See the full list of rankings here.

5. Tom Brady Returns to Patriots After Suspension

Tom Brady recently returned to the New England Patriots after his Deflategate suspension. Brady was suspended for four games after the Patriots tampered with with the footballs used in the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts in January 2015.

6. Manny Pacquiao Wins Welterweight Belt for the Third Time

Manny Pacquiao claimed back the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt for the third time after beating Jessie Vargas on November 5, 2016. A total of 16,131 spectators, including Floyd Mayweather, came out to watch the fight at Thomas & Mack Center.

7. Colin Kaepernick and 49ers Continue to Gain Media Attention

Colin Kaepernick garnered media attention as the 49ers prepared to face the Saints on November 6, 2016. Kaepernick has recently gotten publicity for his national anthem protest, which began before a pre-season game in 2016. He chose to sit down during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” later saying that he is “not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
