Why Valentine’s Day Rocks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Valentine’s Day is a day that gets a lot of hate. Whether it is from singles who despise the reminder that they are alone, or the masses who claim it is simply another way for corporate America to snatch up our hard earned dollars, a day which is supposed to be full of love can be full of a lot of hate. This Valentine’s Day I definitely felt in the minority as someone who loves it. Through the thick sap which cover’s February 14th there are many positives whether you are single or happily cuffed.

1. Candy/Flowers/Cards/All typical V-day gifts

Whether from your long-term boyfriend or from your bff or from your mom or even from yourself, you are bound to get some sweet treats or pretty flowers or maybe a teddy bear that is too big to fit on your bed. There is a pink and red glow pouring out the doors of CVS this time of year because of all the Valentine’s Day essentials they have stocked. Your heart may break a little bit when you see a boy walking with flowers which you can assume he is giving to his girlfriend; however, I saw a lot more people getting red envelopes and packages from their parents than from their long-distance lovers in the mail room this past Wednesday.

2. Instagram

Instagram gets A LOT of hate on Valentine’s Day due to the excessive amount of couple pics. HOWEVER, I like all the couple pics. For one thing, it’s a nice update to see who is still with who and to see who quietly started dating without alerting the masses. It can be hard to keep track of the relationship status of everyone you follow! We also all secretly love judging each relationship by the pics posted and how they handle the caption. The perfect caption is the perfect amount of extra. Other than the couple pics, Insta is also full of single gals posting pics of their friends, their dogs, or just themselves with sassy, ironic captions declaring they don’t need a man. Right on ladies!

3. Galentine’s Celebrations

There are equal Galentine’s celebrations happening on February 14 as there are candle lit dinners. A Galentine’s Day celebration is a super fun night with your single ladies celebrating how much you love each other and your single status. There is no love like the love you have for your gfs and V-day is the perfect excuse to eat an excessive amount of food, drink wine, watch rom-coms, wear comfy clothes and do a face mask with your besties. My friends and I had ourselves a night at Friendly’s followed by watching Bridesmaids. The girls from our squad who had to obligatory go on dates with their men were extremely jealous. Sorry ladies–V-day is for the girls!

4. Food

Regardless of it’s a romantic dinner with your honey or a feast at Chili’s with the girls, or even ordering a pizza by yourself while you study for your test you have the next day (because let’s not forget that you can’t always drop everything on a Wednesday night!), Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse for feasting. And who doesn’t love feast.

5. An excuse to tell everyone you love that you love them

We all have people in our lives who we love, but we don’t always scream it from the rooftops like we should. On Valentine’s Day, we all get a reminder to tell our dearest loved ones that we love them. It is a day of ALL love, not just romance.

So if you are a Valentine’s Day hater, get over yourself! Maybe this is not the year that you have a loving boyfriend and maybe your crush did not come to you and confess his secret love for you with a grand gesture–but who cares! For this year, love the people in your life who you DO have and relish in the chocolate that is stocking the store shelves. Maybe you will be on a date with your new boyfriend next year and strangely miss having a girls-night-in, gushing about your bffs latest sexcapade with The Notebook playing in the background.
