Why I Love The Green Mountain State

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Vermont has always been, and probably always will be, my home. It’s also where my “home away from home” is: St. Michael’s College. I have already shared my love for St. Mike’s in a previous article, but one of the reasons I love the school I go to is because of its location. Although many times, when out of state, I’ve heard the question “is Vermont in Canada?” (come now, if you live in the US, then you should probably know all 50 states), Vermont is the most well-known state to me, as it’s where I was born and raised. I can’t imagine living in any other state. The familiarity, the natural beauty, and the people are all reasons why I love the Green Mountain State.

Although Vermont is pretty small, there are still so many places that I haven’t explored, but it’s still familiar enough to me. I grew up in literally the smallest town in Vermont; all we have is a gas station and a town office, just to give you an idea of how small it is. However, I have been able to travel around Vermont and see what it has to offer. Burlington, VT is the closest city to where I live, both at home and St. Mike’s, so I’ve become pretty familiar with this city, which will be the basis of why I love Vermont so much. The waterfront in Burlington is absolutely gorgeous, but there are also places like Church Street which consists of different shops, restaurants, etc. I enjoy how many restaurants, especially in Vermont, use local ingredients, which makes the food so much better! Burlington is also fairly diverse, compared to the rest of Vermont, so you’ll meet many different people as you walk around the city. This only gives a brief overview of how great Burlington, or even Vermont, really is, but one has to come to this state to experience our more laid back “city life”.

Many people visit Vermont in the fall because of how beautiful the foliage is. Fall is one of the prettiest seasons in Vermont, I’d have to agree, but the other three seasons make this state just as beautiful. Being able to experience all four seasons is amazing — it creates variety. In the spring, all of the trees and flowers are in bloom, in the summer everything is bright green, and in the winter snow covers the mountains. At times, I take this natural beauty for granted, but sometimes I stop and look at everything around me and realize how lucky I am to live in Vermont.

Last but not least, I love Vermont because it’s where the people I love are. My love for the state is immense, but the love I have for my family and friends in this state is even greater. Although I can’t imagine myself living in another state, without my family and friends, it would never be the same. I have so many memories in the Green Mountain State, and I hope I will make many more to come.
