What Getting Sick in College Taught Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Somehow I was lucky enough to nearly make it until the end of the semester without getting sick. While some of my friends and people on my floor have caught viruses, I’ve been fortunate enough to escape with no more than a mild cold. That is, until this past week. To keep it short, I’ve learned that there are only so many things that can keep you occupied when you’re forced to stay in bed for six days straight (netflix, sleep, netflix, sleep…you get the picture.) So without further ado, here a few of the things I’ve learned from being (super) sick in college.

1. You always think you want to sleep all day…until you actually have to

I don’t think there’s been a single day this semester when I haven’t said the words “I need a nap.” I basically want to sleep all day every day. So having to stay in bed for nearly a week should be great right? Wrong. Sometime around day 3, you start to actually get tired of sleeping. Crazy.

2. You’re going to need friends who are willing to be temporary nurses

I already knew I had some insanely awesome friends, but they really brought it to a whole new level. From checking in every hour, to filling my water and bringing me the occasional food from Alliot, I honestly don’t think I could’ve survived without them.

3. Work will seem impossible

You press play on yet another movie and lay back, ready to settle in. But something seems wrong…oh…it’s that pesky google docs tab that’s still sitting in the corner of your screen, just waiting for you to actually do some work with all this free time. Sigh.

4. Your dorm will start to look a little like a prison cell

I love my dorm. My roommate and I decorated it to feel just like home and it couldn’t have turned out better. But there’s only so long you can stay within the confines of those cinder brick walls before you start to get a little restless and dream of being anywhere else. Even walking to your next class.

5. Even Netflix will start to get old

“Are you still watching?” Yes, Netflix. It’s sad. But I am still watching. Please don’t make me feel any worse than I do right now. Now play the next episode of New Girl.

If this sounds like you right about now…good luck and get well soon.
