It is so easy to become wrapped up in our own lives and disregard things that do not directly influence us. From the person sitting next to us, to the people on the other side of the world, to humanity collectively, it is easy to forget the complexities of everyone and everything outside ourselves. For the next minute, let’s take a step back and try to put things in perspective.
By the time you finish reading this article, you will have blinked 15 times, taken 14 breaths, and had all 6 quarts of blood circulate through your entire body 3 times (1,2,3). While the United States national debt will increase by $3 million, 115 couples will have gotten married (1,4). Worldwide, 105 people will have passed away while 250 babies will be brought onto this Earth—115 of which will be born into poverty(1,5). Over 5 million pounds of garbage will have been produced, more than 125 million pounds of carbon dioxide will have been released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, and 510 million pounds of ice will have melted into the oceans (1,6). There will have been 5 earthquakes, 600 strikes of lightning hitting the Earth, and 1,800 star explosions (1).
