Songs to Listen to This Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Like most people, I love music and for me it’s a huge stress reliever to help me get through these last few busy weeks of second semester. There is nothing more satisfying than discovering new tunes to listen to so I came up with a list of some of my newest, favorite alternative jams. Enjoy!

1.  “Cool” by Soccer Mommy

Omg you guys, if you haven’t listened to Soccer Mommy yet and are a fan of alternative music, GET GOING. She is adorable for one, but her lyrics are clever and make you wanna get up and bop around with your girlfriends. This is probably my favorite song by her right now. If you like this song, check out “Scorpio Rising” by her!

2. “Sprained Ankle” by Julien Baker

This song is a bit moody, but I’m into it. The lyrics are beautiful and Julien’s voice is angelic. Check out this song if you’re going through a breakup or just in need of something to cry to while it snows for the 800th f*cking time during the month of April in Vermont :)

3. “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand” by Leon Bridges

I guess this song isn’t so much alternative, but I love it just the same. I first discovered Leon when watching “Big Little Lies” and ever since I have been obsessed with him. He’s pretty blues-y/jazz-y and something about his voice is just super sensual. This song is one of his newest and the composition alongside the lyrics is impeccable. If you like this song, check out “River” or “Coming Home” by him as well.

4. “look@ugo” by Mosie

When I first heard this song it reminded me of a song my best friend would love and I was right, she loves it as much as I do. It’s super funky and something you would wanna rip shots to on a Friday night during your pregame. I highly recommend, it’s been a crowd pleaser every time I’ve played it thus far.

5. “Glowing” by D.A. Wallach

My boyfriend showed me this song and if you listen to the lyrics, it’s probably the cutest song ever. It’s like the-first-dance-at-your-wedding kind of song. I like it because it sounds like something from the 70s or 80s, but also Tyler the Creator was a producer for the music video. Check it out here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoMvhEBj2GU

6. “Southern Nights” by Whitney

My love for Whitney is uncanny. Pretty much any song they release, I’ll probably promote and tell you it’s the best song ever. I’ve seen them a few times in person and they’re the cutest duo ever plus their music is super low-key but catchy in a funny sort of way. If you like this song, check out “No Woman” or “Polly” by them.
