Growing up, there were two purposes to my pillow case: one was to cover my pillow, and the other was to take as my trick-or-treating bag.

Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved the spirit, spookiness, and spontaneity of Halloween. Between dressing up, walking from door to door collecting candy, and later trading that same candy for all of my favorites, the holiday has always had such an exciting and fun essence to it. Now, as a 20 year old college student living amid a global pandemic, trick-or-treating isn’t my go-to Halloween activity. Nonetheless, I’ve come up with a few other options to keep the thrilling atmosphere alive.

  • Candy corn is considered a seasonal snack (to retailers at least), and I’ve found that having a bowl out on the kitchen table is a simple, delicious reminder of the fall and Halloween seasons!

  • It’s possible that Halloween is the only day of the year when it’s acceptable to dress up as anything you want to be, so why not participate? Coming up with a creative costume on your own, with roommates, or with friends is always a blast.

  • I’ve also always loved to bake Halloween desserts! Maybe that’s just me being a nerd or loving chocolate, but there are so many recipes and decorating options on the Internet to try out!

  • Carving pumpkins and scary movies… two more of my favorite things about the holiday!

Maybe Halloweeen isn’t for you, and that’s okay! However to me, it’s a fun, spooky, and exciting day to dress up, eat an absurd amount of sweets, and watch a classic movie. Sounds pretty good to me right about now.
