Selena Gomez Songs That You Might Have Forgotten About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter.

On Feb. 23, Selena Gomez released her single “Love On.” Gomez has been in the music industry since 2013 and has released countless chart topping songs. Although the name and date of her new album have not been released, she told Vanity Fair that the theme of the new album is freedom. As her fans await new music, let’s look at some of her older songs you might have forgotten about.

Kind Messages

“Who Says” by Selena Gomez and the Scene is an empowering song with lyrics such as, “You’ve got every right to a beautiful right to a beautiful life” and the iconic chorus, “Who says you’re not worth it?” This is a great song if you need to get hyped up before a presentation or need a boost of confidence before an interview.

From her album “Revival,” the second track, “Kill Em With Kindness” was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 15 weeks not only because of its catchy beat, but because it has a positive message about peace and love, something Gomez has frequently embodied through her actions in the spotlight as a celebrity. I remember when this song came out when I was in fourth grade, it created a kinder environment in my elementary school.

On her album “Rare,” “Lose You to Love Me” is a song about self-love and healing. In interviews, Gomez has said it was one of her most vulnerable songs. Another honest and supportive song of hers is “My Mind and Me.” The lyric, “If someone sees me like this, then they won’t feel alone now,” encapsulates Gomez’s choice to share her experiences with mental health. “Anxiety” by Julia Michaels, which features Gomez, is another song where she opens up about her mental health experiences.

Latin Music

Gomez proudly displays her American-Mexican identity in her music career. “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake, Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B earned Gomez her first No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs Chart. She collaborated with DJ Snake Again on “Selfish Love.” Gomez has shown she is proud of her Latin heritage by releasing the songs in Spanish and English. On “Bidi Bidi Boom Boom,” she sang with one of the most celebrated Mexican American entertainers, Selena. She has translated “Who Says” to “Dices” to have her empowering message reach more people. In the music video for her Spanish-language single “De Una Vez,” she nods to icon Frida Kahlo in a light pink dress with flowers in her hair.

Honorable Mentions

“Love You Like a Love Song,” “The Heart Wants What It Wants” and “Hit the Lights” are all tracks that whenever they come on, I feel nostalgic and cannot help but dance. “We Don’t Talk Anymore” by Selena Gomez and Charlie Puth and “It Ain’t Me” with Kygo are two of my favorite collaborations of hers.

For over ten years, Selena Gomez has individually released songs and collaborated with others that have topped the Billboard Charts. While fans eagerly await new music from Gomez, they can enjoy her extensive discography filled with emotional ballads, catchy pop songs, unique collaborations and songs in both English and Spanish.
