The Power of a Compliment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter.

We spend ample time complimenting others for their physical appearance. These categories are easy to compliment because of their accessibility: you can always see the amazing boots someone is wearing or their cute haircut. However valuable this type of compliment can be, complimenting a part of someone’s personality that isn’t always visible can have a different type of value that can have a more profound impact. Structuring a compliment to someone that highlights something unique you believe they’re good at is rewarding to both you and the person receiving it. It shows that you have noticed a positive skill about them and want to celebrate it: a simple concept we overlook the importance of. The power of a well-formulated compliment can change the trajectory of someone’s day, tell them something they didn’t know about their self or remind them of why they are doing something they are doing.  So, when you have a minute, tell someone about how valuable their communication skills are or how their unique ability to make everyone feel loved is appreciated. They will appreciate your effort and thoughtfulness more than you know.
