In Defense of “Basic”

Monse Mora Student Contributor, Saint Louis University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SLU chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

The word “basic” is often used to describe women who prefer mainstream products, trends and music. What actually counts as mainstream has shifted throughout the years. Years ago, being basic involved liking anything pumpkin spice and wearing Uggs. Now being basic can include anything from liking Olivia Rodrigo to wearing cow print. Internet memes that mock basic girls have increased, as seen in the 2019 “VSCO girl” meme. Girls were mocked for having a basic aesthetic of Hydroflasks, scrunchies and polaroid cameras. But, why do we hate everything that most teenage girls like? We should reclaim the word and embrace everything, no matter how basic others deem it.

Here is my defense of things I love that the internet has labeled basic.

1. The Color pink

For so long, I was embarrassed by my liking of the color pink. Liking pink was always associated with being like “every other girl.” As a child, I remember lying when other kids asked me what my favorite color was. As an adult, there have been times when I’ve felt a little silly admitting pink is my favorite color. However, pink is a great color and makes me feel in touch with my femininity. When I wear pink, I feel powerful and pretty. Not to mention, pink matches with (almost) everything. I am convinced that every outfit can be made a little better with just a hint of pink.

2. Avocado toast

Avocado toast, when done right, is delicious. The combination of the creamy avocado, crunchy bread and seasonings makes for a good and easy breakfast. Avocado toast is nutritious and has a good balance of carbs and fat. This breakfast is endlessly customizable, and can be served plain or with an egg, tomatoes and various other toppings.

3. Taylor Swift

I will never understand why liking Taylor Swift has been labeled basic. She has amazing lyricism and manages to make the listener feel every emotion in the book. Her songs are catchy and relatable. She sings about experiences that most girls go through, such as love, heartbreak and finding your identity. She has explored many different genres of music throughout the years and has proven her talent in songwriting, singing and performing.

4. Claw Clips

No matter how many people use claw clips, they remain a cute and practical hair accessory. They hold your hair well and are a fun way to incorporate different colors into your hair. As someone who hates having hair in their face, and always loses those pesky little hair ties, claw clips are a great way to keep my hair out of my face and remain stylish. Claw clips are versatile, hard to lose and give that “girl on the go” aesthetic.

5. “Trashy” Reality TV

I’ll be the first to admit it. For a long time, I did not understand the appeal of reality TV. It felt calculated and fake. I am happy to report that I now understand the hype. Shows like “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” are entertaining and captivating. If I suspend my disbelief for long enough, being able to find someone you love on reality TV feels possible. Reality TV is a fun way to take a break from real life.

You shouldn’t worry about whether liking something makes you “basic” or not. How others perceive what you enjoy should not deter your enjoyment of anything no matter how “basic” it seems to others. Remember, it’s not about what others think, it’s about what you enjoy.
