Over the past semester, I saw advertisements for Function of Beauty nearly every time I logged into Instagram. I watched the videos of girls with long curly hair talk about how their hair was soft, voluminous, manageable, and better than it ever had been. After a few months of this, I finally caved and ordered my own set of custom shampoo and conditioner, and it has truly changed my haircare game.

Some of you may be wondering, what exactly is Function of Beauty? For those of you who haven’t been bombarded with ads on social media, Function of Beauty is a customized hair care line with shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments, hair masks, and hair serums all personalized to your unique hair structure and hair goals. All of the products are paraben and sulfate-free, as well as vegan, cruelty-free, and sustainability-focused.

You begin the process by building your hair profile, where you select your hair type, hair structure, and scalp moisture. You are then prompted to enter up to five hair goals. These goals include volumize, anti-frizz, color protection, oil control, hydrate, and many more. If one of your goals is to reduce brassiness in color-treated hair, your shampoo will be a deep purple.

After selecting your goals you can also choose between six different scents for your products or go fragrance-free. Finally, you can personalize the color of your shampoo and conditioner and choose a name or nickname to appear on the bottle.

When it comes to actually ordering the products, you have the option to order only the shampoo or conditioner or order them together. One thing I love about Function of Beauty is that you can mix and match sizes to get a larger shampoo or conditioner depending on which one you use more. You can also set up a subscription for the products to have them delivered every three or six months, and this is how you get free shipping on your order. The products arrive in a cute little box with your name on it, and every order comes with a set of stickers to put on your bottles.

Now that you have the run-down on Function of Beauty, I’ll share my own experience with the products. I ordered both the shampoo and conditioner and have been using them for about three months now. During my first wash, I noticed that the shampoo lathers SO well, and my hair had that soft, moisturized feeling before I even used the conditioner. Overall, I have noticed that my hair is incredibly soft, and my natural curls are much more defined. I also have relatively tangly hair, but after using these products my hair is nearly tangle-free even on its second or third day between washes. The purple shampoo has been great at keeping my blonde highlights the right color and avoiding brassiness. I have also noticed that my scalp never feels dry or irritated from these products.

All in all, I love my Function of Beauty products and have seen amazing results so far! They are definitely pricey (especially if you’re switching from a super generic brand like me), but I have found them to be worth the money. If your hair is manageable and you’re happy with it most days, these products might not be worth the money for you, but if you’ve been struggling to get your hair under control and looking healthy, I say give Function of Beauty a try!
