FX’s Adults took the TV world by storm, gaining a dedicated fanbase after its 2025 debut, and now growing even more in popularity following the release of a second season. But what is it about this show that makes it so great? Why are fans and critics alike comparing it to beloved sitcoms such as New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, and even Friends?
Adults follows the classic roommate comedy format – a group of twenty-somethings living together, surviving adulthood in Queens through the power of friendship and non-existent personal boundaries. But what separates this show from others of its kind is how genuine it is. Many have attempted to achieve this, but fallen short due to awkward writing, or dated jokes. Adults embraces its audience and Gen Z’s unique sense of humor, creating a show that is laughing with young adults, instead of at them.
But who exactly is living there?
Samir, owner of the house, professional worrier, and childhood best friend of Billie.
Billie, the friend who definitely peaked in high school, but that you love all the same.
Anton, charismatic social butterfly, and arguably the only real adult in the group.
Issa, chaotic but with a big heart, who is deeply dedicated to her long string of quirky odd jobs (the most recent of which being children’s dance teacher).
And of course, fan favorite Paul Baker, who refutes all stereotypes regarding brunette men with mustaches by being the nicest guy in New York City (probably because he’s actually Canadian).
I personally love how utterly insane Adults is. The characters are ridiculous, the story lines are ridiculous, the fact that Samir’s parents are conveniently on a cross-country road trip of indefinite length, thus allowing the gang to squat in their house long term, is ridiculous. Five college graduates having a fifty (ish) percent unemployment rate is honestly the most realistic part of this show. But so is being a young person paying rent for the first time and running on a half-developed brain.
So if you’re looking for a laugh and five new best friends, give Adults a try.
