Skidmore hosted its annual Raíces Banquet tonight, bringing together students, faculty, and community members for an evening dedicated to celebrating Latinx culture, identity, and community. Attendees were encouraged to wear either traditional clothing or formal attire, creating a thoughtful blend of cultural expression and elegant eveningwear. While only a handful of students wore traditional garments, those who did showcased meaningful patterns, and designs that reflected their heritage and the banquet’s cultural significance.

Most guests opted for formal looks, and the result was a sophisticated atmosphere that elevated the entire event. Sleek dresses, tailored suits, and polished styling choices contributed to a night that felt intentional and celebratory. The mix of contemporary fashion and cultural elements served as a reminder of the diverse identities within the Latinx community at Skidmore and the many ways students choose to honor their raices.

Beyond the fashion, the evening offered a series of engaging moments that strengthened the sense of connection among those in attendance. Guests enjoyed a lovely performance by the Ramitas Dance Team, a bachata dance, whose choreography brought energy and cultural pride to the banquet. A piñata added a joyful, nostalgic touch to the night, giving students a moment to participate in a tradition many grew up with.

The banquet also featured a trivia activity designed to help attendees learn more about the E-board of the Raíces club. The game encouraged conversation, laughter, and reflection, reinforcing the importance of community within the club. Faculty members who attended added another layer of support, engaging with students and showing their appreciation for the cultural work Raíces continues to lead on campus.

A highlight of the evening was the keynote speaker, a paralegal working in New York, who shared her professional journey and the challenges and motivations that shaped it. Her message emphasized resilience, the value of representation, and the importance of staying connected to one’s cultural identity while pursuing career goals. Her presence underscored the banquet’s commitment not only to celebration but also to mentorship and inspiration.

The meal, widely praised by attendees, was another standout element of the night. Students described the food as flavorful, comforting, and reminiscent of homemade dishes, noting how meaningful it felt to share a meal that reflected familiar tastes and traditions. The catering team’s thoughtful preparation contributed significantly to the welcoming and culturally grounded atmosphere of the event.

Overall, the Raíces Banquet offered more than a night of elegant fashion and entertainment. It served as a space for students to celebrate heritage, build community, and reflect on identity in a supportive setting. Even without a majority of traditional clothing, the event successfully brought together cultural appreciation, personal expression, and collective pride—illustrating what Raíces represents at its core: a commitment to honoring Latinx culture while uplifting and connecting the Skidmore community.
