This Season’s Must-See Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Our favorite time of the year is approaching. And no, we donʼt mean the holidays (although we canʼt wait for those too) we mean movie season! Thatʼs right ladies, start saving up because you’ll be purchasing a lot of movie tickets in these next month. But don’t worry–we took the liberty of listing the must-sees so you can plan ahead. After all, popcorn does add up…

The Twilight Sega: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

Ok, this had to make the list. Maybe you were an age-appropriate twi-hard and now you’re that awkward 20-year-old age, still determined to get through the series. Maybe you want to see the movie purely for comedic reasons, or perhaps just to see the emotional tension between newly separated KStew and RPattz (weʼre definitely in this group). Either way, itʼs the end of the Twilight era, and like it or not, this gem kicks off our holiday movie season!

Anna Karenina

We’ve all been waiting for the next epic Keira Knightley romantic tragedy, and itʼs finally here! Based on Leo Tolstoyʼs famous novel, Anna Karenina the story of a society woman who threatens her reputation and marriage to government official Karenin (played by a cosmetically but ever-beautiful Jude Law) by having an affair with society man, Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, aka the stoner hottie in Savages). This definitely has some serious Oscar potential, and we canʼt wait!

Silver Linings Playbook

Pat (Bradley Cooper) has just been released from a mental institution, is living with his parents, and basically has nothing when he meets equally troubled Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence in a refreshing edgy role). The two agree to help each other move forward, and end up growing closer along the way. Weʼre super excited to see these two involved in a complicated, dysfunctional romance. Also, did you notice Bradley Cooper ballroom dancing? We definitely did.

Life of Pi

Based on the best-selling book, this fantastical story follows a boyʼs journey after a shipwreck, where he finds himself on a rowboat with a tiger (just your average day, right?). Directed by multiple Academy Award winner Ang Lee, weʼre sure this movie will bring in some attention during award season.

Hitchcock

Starring Anthony Hopkins (in yet another unsettling role), this biographical film covers Alfred Hitchcockʼs creation of Psycho, while focusing on his marriage to wife Alma, played by Helen Mirren. Packed with talent, it is sure to get some Academy attention. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson plays the bombshell actress (but are we even surprised?).

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Another end (or rather…beginning?) to a favorite series, this classic is bound to attract huge audiences. The prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit follows Frodoʼs uncle, Bilbo Baggins, on his original journey to the Lonely Mountain. Like the book, this installment probably wonʼt be quite as epic and intense as the other LOTRs, but is definitely still worth seeing! Although, personally, weʼre going to miss the dark and sexy Viggo Mortenson.

Save the Date

For the indie flick lovers out there, this looks very promising. Lizzy Caplan (Janice Ian, anyone?) stars as a modern woman in a situation many of us have experienced: a break-up followed by a rebound relationship. We love how funny and real the story is, as well as the acting. With indie movies and shows like HBOʼs Girls becoming increasingly popular, weʼre sure this equally relatable flick will be a new chick-flick fav!

This Is 40

The token comedy of the holiday movie list, this film had us laughing as soon as the trailer was released. Based on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mannʼs characters in Knocked Up, this feel-good sequel follows their marriage as they try to turn their lives around for the better. Judd Apatow always delivers, especially when Paul Rudd is involved. Our favorite line from the trailer: “I saw you have babies… payback time.”

The Impossible

Whatʼs a holiday season without a dramatic, true-story, survival flick? Just kidding… but actually this does look good. Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts star as the parents of two boys in the nonfictional tale of a family caught in the horrific Thailand tsunami of 2004. This one will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!

Les Miserables

We fell in love as soon as we heard Anne Hathaway sing. That single opening line pretty much begged for tears. An unbelievably powerful musical finally put to film with an all star cast (Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, and Amanda Seyfried, to name a few), this one is a must-see! To make it even better, all of the singing for the movie is recorded live! Donʼt believe it? Check out this First Look and let the anticipation begin!

Okay, now that youʼve been debriefed on the approaching movies, pick your faves and save the dates (or see them all, we won’t tell). Keep your eye on a few of these for award season–youʼll be a step above the rest!
