Review: Freeman’s Charcoal + Black Sugar Face Mask

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

I enlisted one of my male friends to test out the Freeman’s “Polishing Charcoal + Black Sugar Gel Mask and Scrub” that was sent to us in the most recent Her Campus survival kit. I have actually tried this particular face mask before, and so thought it would be fun to try it out on someone who has not. My friend was a good sport and cautiously agreed when I proposed putting this on his face, and I documented his reactions for my own amusement, and for anyone interested in trying this product.

The first reaction to this mask is that it feels very granular- the black sugar is definitely a prominent ingredient but it spreads on fairly easy, though you have to make sure it doesn’t clump up too much.  As I know from using this mask before, and as my friend also noticed, the mask seems to heat up on your face as it goes on, which is unexpected but interesting. It’s more of a scrub than a mask so you don’t need to make sure it’s applied perfectly, as you will exfoliate your face with it once the 10 minutes of sitting are up.

As the 10 minutes went by the main reactions were “it’s a little itchy” and “it’s warm, it’s a little tingly”. He said that he kind of forgot it was on his face which I take to be a positive review, as many clay-based face masks tighten your face uncomfortably. Another perk is that the mask smells nice, but not in an overpowering way.

When my alarm went off he scrubbed the mask and then washed it off, finding in the process that splashing your face like in face wash commercials doesn’t actually work as planned.

The final review was, “My skin feels softer and fresher…it feels less oily and less greasy” and “It feels like something I would do on a more regular basis before bed if given the opportunity”.

Overall, the mask was a success and I think I have converted my friend into a face-mask believer.
