The Oscars Best Moments

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Last Sunday marked the 84th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. Celebrities galore walked the red carpet and showed off their magnificent dresses. Silent movie, “The Artist” was the winner of the night, winning for “Best Picture,” “Best Directing” and “Best Actor in a Leading Role,” including “Best Score” and “Best Costume Design.” As expected, the Oscars this year boasted poignant moments conveying all types of emotions: some heartwarming, some sad, some hilarious, some weird and some just plain unexpected. Here are Her Campus’s top moments from the 2012 Oscars!

  • Well-Deserved Award. Meryl Streep wins third “Best Actress in a Main Role” for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” Age has not slowed her down a bit! She has been nominated an astounding 17 times. Can this woman do no wrong? She is talented and believable in any role she takes on, from demonic Runway boss Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada” to Julia Child in “Julie and Julia.”
  • Wardrobe Malfunction! Jennifer Lopez presented with Cameron Diaz, wearing an exquisite Zuhair Murad custom gown and she showed a little more than expected. Gossipers report that her left nipple might have slipped out of her dress. It remains an enigma as to whether it really happened or not.

  • Heartwarming Moment. Actor Christian Bale presented Octavia Spencer for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” for bestseller-turned-movie “The Help.” Spencer was completely shocked and overwhelmed with emotions. She thanked numerous influences in her life and exclaimed, “I’m freaking out” while shedding tears of happiness. It is always uplifting to know that there are still Hollywood stars that are down-to-earth and have a heart!
  • The Host with the Most. The 84th Annual Academy Awards marked Billy Crystal’s ninth hosting gig with the Academy. Crystal is a hilarious comedian who carries the crowd flawlessly when it comes to hosting the Oscars. Few other hosts can boast being a natural choice (maybe Steve Martin). Crystal’s hosting gave the show a different energy than Anne Hathaway and James Franco’s turn last year; it made viewers feel back at home and at ease watching the show.
  • Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil’s appearance was an unexpected presentation for sure, both beautiful and magnificent. The performance featured their signature acrobatics performed to a score by Danny Elfman. The performance was a great way to break up the show.
  • Graceless Appearance. Sacha Baron Cohen, best known for his role as Borat, came out of hiding and made an appearance at the ceremony. The Academy contested for days whether to allow the actor at the ceremony, where he dressed in costume from his latest film, “The Dictator.” He carried an urn that he claimed contained “King Jong II’s” ashes, and when he stopped to talk to E! Correspondent Ryan Seacrest on the Red Carpet, he proceeded to spill the “ashes” on Seacrest, before quickly being taken away by security. Needless to say, the Academy regrets their decision to allow the comedian to attend the event.

Every year the Oscars give us all something to talk about, whether it’s the fabulous ensembles or not-so tasteful hairdos to the surprising wins and losses. This year was no different with an array of dramatic performances, heart-warming speeches, and hilarious hosting. We’ll see you next year, collegiettes!
