You know those sudden urges you get as a 20-something year old college student while studying abroad where you’re like, “I should get a new piercing. Or a tattoo. Or BOTH – honestly I should be exploring myself, you know?”   Well I was one of those people who acted on that urge, and one Tuesday afternoon I left school and went (with a girl I had known for 2 months) to get my nipple pierced. We walked directly from a class on Organizational Behavior into a tattoo parlor, where a French man with gigantic American flag gauges poked a hole through my nipple, essentially. Just your average Tuesday, amiright? Life since that fateful Tuesday afternoon has never been the same.

I joke, I kid. But daily life things have been altered due to the piercing I now have, and love. One thing that changed almost immediately was my new self-love. My right boob is SO PRETTY! It’s all decorated and whatnot, which is positively thrilling. Another thing that’s different is how I wash myself in the shower. Loofah’s are off limits because the little holes in the fabric wrap around the ball at the end of the piercing and pull and it hurts like you wouldn’t even BELIEVE. It’s whacky, but bath sponges work just as well and are a lot less risky. Another thing that has changed is activities when going bra-less become much more of a gamble, like driving for example. How would this be different? Well hopping in the car to run an errand or pick a friend, sans-bra, calls for some strategic seatbelt placement. Sometimes the belt can shift and end up between my boob and the bar of the piercing. It’s the most BIZARRE feeling in the world, and one sudden movement and you could end up in some serious pain.

But to be QUITE honest, the most fun thing about having a nipple piercing is the look on some guy’s face when they take off your bra for the first time and see that one (or both!) of your nips are bedazzled. Its empowering as hell, and makes you feel like a bad-ass betch.

All-in-all, nip piercings are delightful and add a fun secret that only you and a certain few will know about and can be empowering as hell. So flaunt your bra-less-ness and act on your crazy urges once in a while.
