Juliana Genovese ’17, Member of Dance Club 213

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

HC Skidmore sat down with Juliana Genovese (’17), to find out more about Skidmore’s newest hip hop dance group, 213.

HC: How long have you been dancing for?

JG: I joined my local dance studio when I was three years old and absolutely fell in love with it. I’ve trained in a wide array of styles but once I got into high school I really focused on jazz hip-hop fusion and hip hop.

HC: What is the choreography process like in 213? Is it a group effort or do you have one choreographer?

JG: In 213 everything we do is a group effort! We choreograph different portions of a dance in order to show off everyone’s individual style. That’s really my favorite thing about the group–we don’t all come from the same dance background. Some of us are poppers, lockers, breakers, or generic hip-hop dancers. Giving everyone the opportunity to choreograph allows us to gain a little more experience in different street dance styles.

HC: Does 213 have any shows coming up?

JG: Unfortunately, we don’t have any shows coming up, but we are hoping to release a few dance videos on our Facebook and Youtube pages, so look out for those coming soon!

HC: What can we expect to see from 213 in the future?

JG: This year we hope to put out a lot of videos and we hope to collaborate with a few other clubs to create awesome dance projects and performances. We are also hoping to hold a few workshops this semester open to anyone on campus to come and learn some signature 213 dance moves!
