How to Upcycle your Old Clothes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

As soon as October hits, we know it’s time to start bundling up.  Even though the arrival of autumn brings colder weather, it’s hard not to get excited about throwing on sweaters, light jackets, knee-high boots, and skinny jeans. Plus, I always find myself spending way too much money on new scarves, hats, and gloves for the fall season.

But not this year.

Doing an internship for a sustainable jewelry company has me looking for ways to upgrade my fall wardrobe with clothes I already own and am probably not using.  Upcycling is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint, save money, and get unique accessories that no one else will have.

Here are few of our favorite ways to upcycle old clothes for new fall accessories:

1.)   Remake an old tee-shirt into a light, gauzy infinity scarf.

2.)   Use an old sweater to make a cute cap.

3.)   Turn an old tank top into a chic hobo bag.
