How to Help the Victims of Hurricane Matthew

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Hurricane Matthew is about to ravage the southern coast of the US – and it’s already caused massive amounts of death and destruction in Haiti. While we’re all having fun at Big Show tonight (no shame in that, of course) our friends and family in the Southeast are either evacuating or hunkering down for one of the worst hurricanes they’ve ever seen. This hurricane will be deadly – but even if people evacuate their homes and lives will be swept away with the storm. This will likely be one of the most devestating natural disasters our country has seen in years.

So – how can we help?

Donate, donate, donate. Take the money you were going to spend on that handle of Svedka for Big Show and donate to hurricane relief funds. You won’t have a hangover, and you’ll feel a little bit better about yourself. To make it a little easier for everyone, we’ve compiled a list of places where you can donate. All you have to do is click through.

UNICEF

UNICEF’s focus is on helping children. You can donate directly to their Hurricane Matthew relief fund by clicking here. 90c of every $1 goes directly to children in need.

The Salvation Army

Money donated to the Salvation Army will go toward helping those affected by Hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean. Click here.

Charity Navigator

Charity Navigator is a 501(c)(3) organization that compiles a list of their best places to donate. Each one of the charities they list has a rating page that lists their “financial health, accountability and transparency.” With Charity Navigator, you can feel especially confident that your donation is going where you want it to. Check out their Hurricane Matthew page here.

Gwen is a senior, English major, and co-CC of Her Campus Skidmore. She spends a lot of time watching Pretty Little Liars and Fixer Upper, listening to music, staring at her comptuer screen and wishing words would come easier, and waiting for the New York Islanders to win another Stanley Cup (preferably at the Coli). Also, she really likes cheese and is trying to learn to skateboard. It's not going very well.
