Caroline Falls ’16

Case Walkway is the place to be at Skidmore, especially when looking for style inspiration. With students walking to and from class, getting coffee from Burgess Cafe, and taking a break to enjoy the beautiful fall weather, this area is a buzzing part of campus. Looking around, it can be hard not to notice all of the amazing outfits Skidmore girls wear everyday: ripped jean shorts, oversized sweaters, dresses and tights, flannels, retro accessories—all the works. While we were walking to class one day this week, we fell under the style spell of a Skidmore sophomore, Caroline Falls, and stopped to ask her about her effortlessly awesome look, which was the perfect combination of “eclectic and classy,” as Caroline told us.

Our first inquiry was about where the look came from. Caroline told us that she is a “bit of a scavenger” when it comes to her closet and that she loves retro pieces. Her jacket was a hand-me-down from her brother that originally came from the Nordstrom Boys Department. Her ultra-cool Tommy Hilfiger jean skirt is also a second-generation piece, as it came from a friend’s closet, originally from a thrift store. Adding to the vintage vibe of her outfit, Caroline’s shirt was an old silk pajama-top from her mom and her boots are from a nearby consignment store in her hometown.

When asked where she normally likes to shop, Caroline told us, “When shopping, I’m always looking for a deal. I have a thing for thrift shops and vintage, especially because it’s inexpensive and everything feels one of a kind. I frequently check in with Zara and H&M. They have great basics and always knock-off the overpriced items you find in magazines. But I must say, I’m a huge fan of my mom and brother’s closets!”

We then asked our fashionable friend to describe her style. Caroline achieved her “eclectic and classy” look well by mixing her classy fitted blazer with her roughed up skirt and lace up boots. She added that she “tries to be a little different and a little weird.” About her style, Caroline also said, “I am all about simplicity—making it look like it took me five minutes to get dressed in the morning, even if it was triple that. I have a love for all things autumnal—coats, pants, layers of sweaters, etc. I like to pretend I’m not from California.”

Spoken like a true fashionista, if we may say so.

Since Caroline has such a distinct and awesome sense of fashion, we had to ask where her inspiration comes from. “In terms of a style icon, I can’t say I have a person in mind. I’m inspired by styles from the 1940s and 1990s. They always look so effortless! I’m also constantly getting inspiration from friends and strangers.”

To end off this week’s blog, check out style advice straight from Caroline, who is a perfect example of Skidmore style. “Girls at Skidmore dress incredibly well, and I think it’s because we are always gathering inspiration from one another. I guess my biggest tip is to be you and be comfortable. There isn’t a right or wrong way to dress.  It’s just a question of what will make you feel good when you are walking down the street that day.”
