7 Things To Expect On Your First Fun Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

With the semester starting to wrap up, you first year students have a lot to congratulate yourselves on–you’re almost done with your first year of college! Struggling to navigate friendships, romance, college level work, and how to attain the elusive skill of time management, freshman year is undoubtedly tough. Yet, you have one more milestone to complete before your first year at Skidmore is done: Fun Day. The much-rumored about celebration is viewed by many as the last hurrah before Finals. As the week goes on and you hear one crazy story after the next, don’t let yourself get nervous. With any exciting event, it’s important to set clear expectations so you have the best time possible. At the end of the day, just wear an outfit you feel confident and comfortable in and have a good time with your friends (if you want my grandmotherly advice).

The event takes place on the Library Green from roughly 11am-3pm. Here are some things to expect:

1. Crazy outfits

Since many of us don’t live the lavish life of celebrities, Coachella is but a festival we could attend in our dreams. Thus, Fun Day provides the perfect opportunity to wear the outfit you would wear if you were actually going to Coachella. Expect to see lots of flower crowns, bra-tops, and funky accessories.

Since I’m an old lady and experienced many a Fun Day, some of the most memorable outfits I’ve seen include animal onesie pajamas, American Apparel neon and metallic everything, and more flash tattoos and eye gems than you could buy at every Claire’s combined.

2. Breakfast in Your Res. Hall

Because of #3, the college does a good job making sure students have a nice full stomach. RA’s go above and beyond to provide bagels and coffee right in your common room as a great way to start the day. Eat up!

3. Some drunk people

There is absolutely no pressure to drink on Fun Day, but some people do. Be on the lookout and don’t be afraid to use Campo as a resource (that’s literally what they are there for). It’s always important to remember safety first! Also: hydrate, eat, repeat.

4. Naked run

This is a Skidmore tradition that dates back to who knows when. You may not see it, but here’s your forewarning.

5. Bouncy castles!

This is my personal favorite thing about Fun Day. How often do you get to pretend you’re 6 years old again and race your friends on bouncy obstacle courses or play popcorn in the bouncy castle? Take advantage, my friends.

6. Free hot dogs (YUM)

Because this is pretty much an all day event, Skidmore balls out with a delicious BBQ with all the good stuff like hot dogs and hamburgers. The line will def be long, but will also def be worth it. On the other hand, a trip to D-Hall for a quick recluse from the chaos is never a bad idea.

7. Potentially disappointing weather

People pray to the weather gods that the sun will shine and the temp will be a perfect 75 degrees. Who wouldn’t want that? Yet, because we live in the beautiful Northeast, that weather doesn’t come easy–most likely, it will be little cold and cloudy, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have a great time. Just plan your outfit accordingly!
