5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Skidmore Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

1. Explore Saratoga

It’s hard not to fall in love with Saratoga. Never mind the fact that the town is exceptionally beautiful, it also has a lot to offer. The Saratoga History Museum, the State Park, the hundreds of restaurants- there is so much to do that is only a short walk/ bike ride away. Go for a run outside instead of being cooped up in the gym and appreciate the beauty of the houses lining Broadway, take your homework down to Uncommon Grounds rather than sitting in the library, or explore shops downtown with friends on a weekend afternoon. The beauty of Saratoga Springs was a big factor in my decision to come to Skidmore, and it has not disappointed.

2. Take the time to get to know your professors

In my opinion, the quality of Skidmore’s professors is one of the best things about the school. They are here for the benefit of all of us, and in my experience, most of them would be happy to take time out of their day to sit and have a conversation. They are all so knowledgeable about their subjects and have countless stories and words of wisdom that will help you find your way over your four years here.

3. Step out of your comfort zone

College is about trying new things. Who you are in high school becomes irrelevant the second you step onto campus for the first time, and you have the luxury of being able to reinvent yourself if you so desire. You are in college to figure out who you are and who you want to be, and taking advantage of on or off campus activities will help you do just that. Joining a club, joining a sports team, participating in an open mic, taking a class outside your major- there are so many ways to broaden your experience that you won’t know unless you step out of your comfort zone. What do you have to lose?

4.Don’t waste time with anything/anyone you don’t enjoy

At the beginning of freshman year, the promise of four more years of education seems daunting. As any upperclassman or graduate can tell you, though, those four years will go by faster than you think. As such, every moment of your time is precious, and you shouldn’t waste it doing anything that doesn’t bring you joy. If you find yourself hanging out with people you don’t particularly like, if you’re on a team that takes up all of your time, don’t be afraid to be on the lookout for new things and people that will truly make you happy. College is too short to spend in ways that won’t help you grow and blossom as a person.

5. Go to lectures

Pay attention to the posters lining Case walkway and actually take advantage of all of the cool events happening around campus. Every once in a while there is a visiting professor who gives a lecture, or an open discussion about current issues, and these events are a great opportunity to broaden your perspectives and learn something new. Taking an hour or so out of your day to sit in a lecture could completely change the way you see the world, or if nothing else, provide you with new information that will make you a more well-rounded person.
