Ways to Spread the Holiday Spirit this December

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

The holiday season is a time for giving. Whether you’re giving gifts to family, friends, loved ones or doing a random act of kindness for a stranger, this season brings out the best in people.

Here are some ways you can spread the holiday spirit just in time for Christmas:

1. Decorate, decorate, decorate!

Nothing says Christmas like embroidered stockings and festive string lights. So go ahead and put up that tree, light those sugar cookie scented candles and unwind to some classic Christmas movies. Decorating around your living space alone can increase your excitement for the holidays and put you in a better mood overall, despite the cold weather that comes with it.

2. Turn up the holiday tunes and turn on the movies!

Having music on in the background of your home or playing in your car on the way to class can really lift your spirits during the holidays. Fight the anticipation for Christmas by jamming out to Mariah Carey’s Christmas anthem or relax to some timeless classics. Don’t forget to set a reminder to watch the best Holiday movies on TV like Merry Christmas Charlie Brown or the Polar Express!

3. Do something nice for a neighbor.

Giving back to the people around you can turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one. Some simple ways to pass some joy to those in your community might be buying coffee or food for a stranger, bringing in some sweet treats for your friends and colleagues or even smiling at someone you walk pass! These small gestures can be serious mood boosters for others around you who might be having not-so-good days.

4. Donate time and toys.

For some people, the holidays can be pretty lonely or upsetting since they might not have families or homes to go to or money for gifts to give to their loved ones. This Christmas, try donating your time to local homeless shelters and have a conversation with someone or hear their story. Another way to make the holidays special might be donating toys to children in foster care or hospitals. Small gestures like these can go a long way for someone who is not at privileged.

5. Give a special gift!

Even though some of us may be super hard to shop for, giving gift cards for Christmas is an easy way out! Show someone you really care about them by putting a little more effort into a gift! Whether it’s homemade, customized or store bought, a little extra effort can go a long way and make someone close to you appreciate your gesture all the more!

These are just a few simple things that can help you spread the holiday cheer into your community, friends, family and even with yourself. The holidays are always a special time of year, so avoid being the “Scrooge” of your neighborhood and get a little more festive this Christmas!
