Think PINK: How YOU Can Become More Involved in the Fight to Stop Breast Cancer This Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

Today, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women in the United States. The chance of a woman being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer is about 1 in 36. With the American Cancer Society estimating that 232,340 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in the U.S. and 1.3 million cases worldwide; breast cancer is an increasingly prominent issue in today’s society.

The good news is that survival rates have been steadily rising since 1989, predominately because of advancements in technology that allow for more thorough screenings, and an increased awareness nationwide. However, awareness for the cause is more necessary than ever. The ladies of Her Campus SJU are here to tell you about some of the different events and fundraisers benefitting patients, survivors, and cancer research in the city of Philadelphia this month:

While most people are aware of breast cancer and the staggering number of women it affects each year, many do not have a plan that enables them to detect the disease in its early stages. It is strongly recommended that all women in there twenties recieve a mammogram every three years annually.

Even as a cancer free individual, we owe it to fighting patients and survivors that this month, and every month, we make a promise to do everything we can in order to raise awareness to this disease.  Think PINK!
