Spotlight: SJU Professor Jennifer Joyce

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

Meet this week’s Campus Celebrity: Jennifer Joyce! Like most professors at SJU, Joyce is an expert in her field: news and reporting. When she is not teaching in Merion Hall, you can find her on your TV screen. I was lucky enough to ask her some questions about what her life is like as a reporter for Fox 29 in Philadelphia.

Her Campus: Welcome back to SJU! How’s the fall semester been so far?

Jennifer Joyce: Thank you! It feels great to be back on campus and I love meeting my new students.

HC: Hometown?

JJ: Cherry Hill, NJ

HC: Where did you attend college?

JJ: Undergrad at Temple University and Masters degree from SJU

HC: Favorite spot in Philadelphia?

JJ: There are so many! Honestly, one of my favorite places is the Ben Franklin Bridge.  You can walk, run or bike the bridge. Amazing city views and a great workout!!

HC: Major in college?

JJ: Broadcast Journalism w/minor in criminal justice and a Masters degree in criminal justice with a focus in Homeland Security

HC: First job after college?

JJ: News Reporter for News 12 The Bronx in Bronx, NY

HC: Tell us about your day-job?

JJ: I’m a news reporter for Fox 29 News.  I get to meet people from all walks of life every single day.  I tell their stories: the good, the bad, the inspiring, the horrifying.  My job has taught me so much about life and truly has made me a better person.

HC: What is the most memorable story you have ever covered, and why has it stuck with you?

JJ: Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal & PSU fallout. There were so many stories wrapped in one and so many emotions. It was horrific to think about all of the victims and what they had experienced. Additionally, I was in the press conference at Penn State when it was announced that legendary coach Joe Paterno was fired. We covered the campus riots that followed. There were so many angles, opinions and feelings.  It was a complicated story to tell and an experience I will never forget.

HC: What has been your biggest learning experience working in the field?

JJ: I have learned to work quickly in the field and never miss a deadline. I have also learned to work well with my peers, even if we have differing opinions or different work mentalities. In the field, we are one team.

HC: What is your relationship like with your camera crew?

JJ: I love all of the photographers. Again, teamwork makes the dream work. We are in it together and if we are not on the same page, it will show in our work.

HC: What advice can you give girls who want to follow in your footsteps?

JJ: Do not give up. If there’s something you want, go for it. Get used to rejection. It happens in every industry. A lot. But if you keep working hard and believe in yourself, you will find success. HC: Do you have any favorite sayings or quotes you like to live by?

HC: Do you have any favorite sayings or quotes you like to live by?

JJ: There are always detours in life, but I truly believe that we end up where we are meant to be.

That’s all for now, be sure to tune in to Fox 29 for all the latest updates, and to keep an eye out for this week’s campus celebrity.
