The Kinney Center: For Autism Education and Support

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

To all of you lovely readers who have no idea what the Kinney Center is or what it stands for, welcome. The Kinney Center is a community that is centered on autism education and support. The Kinney Center strives to aid individuals and families who are affected by autism. This community of Learners, SCHOLARS and full time staff work together to establish a hardworking, friendly, and trusting environment.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

A pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder with marked impairments in language, social communication, and characterized by restricted repetitive interests.

How many people are affected by Autism?

1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls). Autism does not only affect individuals with a diagnosis, it affects their families and friends as well.

Who are SCHOLARS?

SCHOLARS (Students Committed to Helping Others Learn about Autism Research and Support) are students who provide one-on-one support to an individual with autism under the guidance from the full time staff. These students work with individuals with autism in the Kinney Center’s youth, adult, and transitional programs. The goal of a SCHOLAR is to help individuals on the spectrum grow to accomplish daily activities as independently as they can. I currently am a SCHOLAR at the Kinney Center and can genuinely say that this was one of the best decisions of my college career. As an Interdisciplinary Health Services Major this program has helped me choose a career path in occupational therapy that will allow me to continue working with individuals who are affected by autism and other disorders. The Kinney Center has taught me skills that I would have not been able to acquire in the classroom alone, for example, I have learned how to adapt to crisis situations, become a leader, and implement Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Anyone can apply to become a SCHOLAR! All you need to have is compassion, the desire to learn, and the ability to work within a community.
