Kehlani and Lizzo Empowering Women Through Song in 2019

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

Here are some empowering songs we can’t get enough of over here at HC SJU!

1. Good Thing by Zedd, Kehlani

Kehlani sings “‘Cause I already got a good thing with me / Yeah, I already got everything I need / The best things in life are already mine / Don’t tell me that you got a good thing for me.”

This song is great to listen to on the go or while you’re working out. It’s super upbeat and gets you feeling empowered throughout the day. The message is basically that you don’t need a man because all that you need, is all that you have right now. You’re a strong, smart, independent woman, and a man isn’t going to make your life better.

2. Truth Hurts by Lizzo

Lizzo sings “Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face / Best friend sat me down in the salon chair / Shampoo press, get you out of my hair.”

Lizzo doesn’t mess around. If someone has something to say to her, then they should just say it. Women are tired of the cryptic language of friends and boyfriends, and it’s better to say things straight up without hesitation. Also, just like cutting your hair, getting a new hairdo empowers women to move on from either a toxic relationship or a past self.

3. Good as Hell by Lizzo featuring Ariana Grande

Lizzo and Ariana both sing “So girl, if he don’t love you anymore / Then walk your fine ass out the door”

Don’t let a guy dictate how you feel about yourself. You’re already good on your own, and you don’t need a man to make you feel that way. Just remember that Lizzo and Ariana are empowering you to choose your own path of happiness, rather than chasing what everyone else is looking for.

So girl, go out there and take on the world! You got this (without a man, of course!).
