Humans of Saint Joseph’s University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

By now you have probably heard of Humans of Saint Joseph’s University and if you haven’t, it’s SJU’s take of the hugely popular Humans of New York, which interviews students, professors, and faculty members to get to know them a little more. Her Campus SJU sat down with the creator, who would like to stay anonymous, to find out about this cool new page.

What gave you the idea to start Humans of SJU?

●      When I was abroad I grew to appreciate all the different cultures I was able to witness not only in my host country but also in the ones I was able to visit. I’m also a fan of the original Humans of New York (HONY), which has had sweeping success.

How long did it take you to launch? Do other students help you?

●      It was actually quite a quick launch. I was able to check with the chair of SJU social media to get approval and within two days I had created the page. Before launching we did our due diligence and checked out the other Humans of… series, including all of the Big 5 schools. As of right now only one other student is helping me run the page but we are assembling a team now who should be active on campus within the week.

What is your goal?

●      Our main goal is to create better conversations with people on campus. Whether it’s saying hi and how’s it going to people you may not or just attempting to have deeper conversations with your closer friends. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget all that goes in other lives. We also forget that there’s so much more to people’s story that we often don’t see or hear. We think it would be awesome for people to go outside their comfort zone and start conversations with new people.

What is your favorite story so far?

●      While we have thoroughly enjoyed all the stories we have gathered thus far, it has definitely been great to hear from the professors and staff. Sometimes we take for granted the advice we get from these people because at this age it seems like we’ve got it all under control. But they’ve been through most of this before and have sage wisdom from their experiences.

Do you hope this continues after you graduate?

●      Yes, definitely! Luckily, I have had some great help from some underclassmen and students who aren’t seniors that I definitely can see taking the helm on this.
