Fire Eaters Food Truck on Campus!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

A large orange truck has been spotted recently around Gompers Elementary and the rumors are true… a food truck has entered the Hawk Hill territory! Welcome, Fire Eaters!  Fire Eaters is a unique food truck that specializes in one of our favorite dishes, PIZZA.

Joshua Schainbaum started fire Eaters in May of 2013. Joshua, a father of three, took a step back last year and realized he needed to change his life. He wanted the ability to spend more time with his family and frankly he wanted to do something he loves. He built a wood fire oven in his backyard and from there he purchased the trailer. (He admits it was a challenge to learn how to drive such a gigantic trailer!) For Joshua it is about following his passion, his passion is baking and pizza is an extension of his passion.

Fire Eaters is a both vegetarian and kosher with vegan options available on the menu! HerCampus found psychology Professor, Elizabeth Becker, at the truck and asked her what she thought of the food truck being on campus.  Becker, who is a vegetarian was enthusiastic, “It is particularly nice to have different fresh and vegetarian options on campus. They even do vegan! You don’t always find that, not on our campus at least.”

Joshua Schainbaum and Elizabeth Becker (and many students) agree SJU in underserved. You never find food trucks around campus, there is limited space for them to even exist. (Which is why Fire Eaters is such a treat!) Of course, you must be wondering…is it any good? Joshua and his workers made me one of their classic pizzas; fresh mozzarella, hand-crushed tomatoes, topped with fresh thyme, oregano and pesto. Wow, just wow. I would like to consider myself a pizza connoisseur and this pizza gets my stamp of approval.

On board with Joshua are two of our very own SJU students! Rugby players John Cilmi (’15) and Nick Conte (’15) work on board with Joshua creating these delicious pizzas. Joshua and John will both tell you their favorite pizza is the Smoked Butternut, Sage, Portobello and Onion. This pizza is part of Fire Eaters Local Harvest menu! This menu is constantly changing depending on what vegetables local farmers are offering. Hurry because the Smoked butternut pizza will only be around for another week!

Nick Conway (’14), lives around the corner from Gompers and recently took to twitter to share his Fire Eaters experience.

We later sat down with Nick to learn about his Fire Eaters experince. “The truck looked cool, I passed it a couple times walking back from class and thought it smelt good!” Nick ultimately decided to go for the classic cheese pizza, “it was really good, a little pricey but I would definitely go back! I ate it in one sitting.”

In terms of price, the pizzas range from 9-17. (It’s worth it) Be aware the truck only takes cash, however if you need to pay with credit card you can simply order online via their website and it will be ready when you arrive!

Well Hawk Hill, there you have it. The rumor is real, there is a food truck on campus and it is delicious!
