If he isn’t wearing a button down and khakis you can find him sporting an Eagles or Flyers jersey. Whether you know him or not, Cory Blazer is a very busy guy on campus and I was lucky enough to sit down with him to get the inside scoop on what he is involved in and what it all means to him. He is a part of a variety of different clubs at SJU and really makes the most of what is offered here.

So background/ basic facts about Cory,

Hometown– Perkasie, Pennsylvania

Major– Communications

Job– Sushi Chef – Cory went through 6 unpaid shifts to learn how to create sushi and now he is one of the main chefs at Café Alessio in Doylestown PA

With that out of the way lets get into it…..

HCSJU: To backtrack a little, were you in involved in high school and if yes then in what?

Cory: With that in mind, in high school, I was a football player, main anchor of the school news, on the power lifting team, and the leader of the school’s cheering section.

HCSJU: First of all this might be a simple question, but why are you involved in such a varitey of activites?

Cory: Coming to college, just like anyone else, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. So, first semester, I joined a club or two, but wasn’t satisfied; I didn’t feel like I was expanding my experiences. It wasn’t until second semester freshman year when I joined the Improv club here at SJU that everything started to fall into place.

HCSJU: So what exactly are you involved in here on campus?

Cory:

1. Improv

2. Club Ultimate Frisbee

3. Big Brothers Big sisters

4. Followed by a Bear

HCSJU: What is your favorite club that you are involved in and why?

Cory: Improv Club because making someone laugh is one of the most rewarding things. Once I joined, I felt it was the first time I could totally be myself, a complete idiot while making people laugh. He is honestly one of the funniest people I know, even during an 8am class he can bring a smile to anyone’s face.

HCSJU: You said you played football in high school, so why would you then switch to ultimate Frisbee?

Cory: I wanted to try something totally new and outside of my comfort zone. A few of my friends were on the team and it looked like a good time. I miss football, but Ultimate Frisbee allows me to have that team spirit while getting a workout and be social.

HCSJU: With so many options for service at SJU why did you choose Big Brother Big Sister?

Cory: That was because I think the best way to give back to Philly is by teaching and supporting the youth. I know it sounds cheesy, but they are the ones that are not going to want the same for their kids. So I feel like even spending an hour a week with them can help make a difference in their lives for change.

HCSJU: Now can you explain what Followed by a Bear is?

Cory: Yes, Followed by a Bear is a play production which is written, directed, and acted out by all students. I joined this club because honestly I have never been in a play before and I wanted to try it out to see how I would do. Also, I wanted to see the scripted side of performing rather then Improv.

For Cory, getting involved isn’t just to keep busy; he wanted to get out of his comfort zone because he said “The biggest form of coming out of your comfort zone is showing people who you actually are as a person.”

I’ve seen Cory preform and it’s crazy to think that the first time he ever preformed on a stage was the first show he had for Improv here at SJU. So don’t miss the chance to see Cory and other Talents at SJU in the Improv Show and Followed by a Bear.
