Technically, America’s sport is baseball. It’s been around longer than any other sport and is enjoyed by both men and women of all ages. But so is football.

I love football. I think football should be America’s sport because of the media, the hype, and the excitement that rolls around every week during the season. Who doesn’t love football Sundays and Monday Night Football? Plus, the Superbowl could give the World Series a run for its money. You just don’t see action (and funny commercials) like that while watching baseball!

Football is so exciting. Some guys don’t really take female sports fans seriously, and that’s alright. Not every girl is as into the sport as I am. For those who don’t know the game well, allow me to explain:

Each team has an offensive line, a defensive line, and a special teams squad. Each of these teams come on and go off the field in a group. The offense’s goal is to score touchdowns or field goals. The defense’s objective is to not allow any points to be scored. And special teams is on the field during kicking plays like punt returns and kickoffs, and have a mixture of offensive and defensive players.

Each offensive line gets a series of four downs in a drive to gain 10 yards and start the four downs over again, until they reach field goal range or score a touchdown. If they don’t gain 10 yards through either running the ball or passing it, they have to punt it down the field for the opposing team to return and get their own shot at scoring. There are many fouls such as unnecessary roughness, personal fouls, facemask grabbing, etc. And there are ways to score more points such as a two-point conversion. But all you need to know are the basics in order to enjoy the game!

My wish is that more females would get involved in the sports industry, especially when it comes to football. You see women like Erin Andrews who are sometimes not taken seriously and are commonly made fun of for asking players “dumb questions” in interviews. A lot of men don’t typically think of women as having a large role in sports. But I think that if more girls knew the sport better, we could get into games just as much as the guys. Take it from me – I’m in a fantasy football league with my boyfriend and all of his guy friends, and I have the most scored points out of all of them.

Fall is here and it’s a chance for women to have a greater involvement in the great sport of football. Whether you know your stuff or you’re just learning the game, I can guarantee that it’s a great sport to watch and involve yourself in.

Catch most of the NFL games this Sunday, starting at 1pm ET!
