Best Things to Do in Philly this May!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

I know we’re all patiently waiting for it to actually feel like Spring each day. I personally would like to burn my winter jacket ASAP! Luckily, warmer days are in our future and Philadelphia, as always, will be the place the be. Here are just five of the events, starting at the beginning of May, that you won’t want to miss!

Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival On May 1st, Franklin Square will transform into the most “lit” festival around. There will be over 15,000 LED lights and 28 different displays – like the 200-foot-long Chinese dragon. You will be sure to get lots of insta-worthy pictures at this event. Finals do start the same week, but don’t worry, the festival will run until June 30th! Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse for a study break?

South Street Spring Festival and Maifest I have another study break to present to you all. Taking place on Saturday, May 5th, several blocks of South Street will be filled with food and drink vendors, entertainment, and more. If you just want to browse the local shops with friends, eat good food and enjoy some cool performances, this is the place for you.

Blue Cross Broad Street Run On Sunday, May 6th, the 10-mile Broad Street Run will take place. If the perfect day for you is joining thousands of people in a run that stretches from the northern edge of the city to the Delaware Waterfront, then you better get your sneakers ready! You could definitely sightsee while you’re at it since you’ll be passing some of Philly’s best landmarks like City Hall, The Avenue of the Arts and the Philadelphia stadium complex.

Spruce Street Harbour Park Mark your calendars for Friday, May 11th! Spruce Street Harbour Park will be reopening for the season. I encourage everyone to experience this place at least once. There are plenty of food and drink options, hammocks, games and a beautiful waterfront view.

Taco Festival at SugarHouse Casino Did somebody say taco festival?! On Saturday, May 12th and Sunday, May 13th, the event will return for its second year. Fifteen different restaurants will be serving yummy tacos and tequila tastings (for my 21-year-old readers). There will also be a beach-themed margarita bar. Need I say more?
