Each year, SJU sends groups of students to 17 service sites throughout the Appalachian region of the United States to experience something new, learn about a different community, and discover something beautiful in the process. Over spring break, students spend their time free from distraction and are given the chance to explore a ministry of service with and for others while building a very special bond with their peers.

Maybe you’ve been before, maybe you plan to go before you graduate, or maybe you’re anxiously awaiting for your first Appalachian experience this March. Regardless, here are some things to keep in mind about this very special program at SJU…
Â
1. Give it a try!
While certainly you’re not required to attend APEXevery year, try to go at least once before your time at SJU comes to an end. It’s a beautiful chance to see a part of our country you may not otherwise visit, a chance to uncover something you’re passionate about, and form relationships with some amazing individuals—both in your group and in the community.
Â
Â
2. Keep an open mind!
It’s easy to get lost in the bubble of our campus and forget about the wide open world around us. Let this experience spark something within you to gain some greater insight and challenge yourself to expand your perspective.
Â
Â
3. Stretch outside your comfort zone!
This may be one of the first times in a while you spend a week without Snapchat or Twitter and really begin to gain a solid perspective on the world around you. It may feel weird at first but allow yourself to be fully immersed in the beauty of it all. Try striking up conversation with someone you haven’t spoken to, you may surprise yourself.
Â
Â
4. Don’t set any expectations!
Every experience is its own adventure; don’t try to compare this to anything you’ve done before. Remember how much each moment and each person has to offer and allow yourself to learn. Take in every little detail without judgment of what you may have thought this week would be like.
Â
Â
5. Engage with the community!
Although you’ll be with a group of friends who will be bringing it all back to campus with you, take advantage of the incredible people who are welcoming you into their homes and neighborhoods for the week. Listen to the stories they have to tell, admire the lives they live. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much you may have in common.
Â
Â
6. Have fun!
This is going to be something you remember for the rest of your life—enjoy it! Let yourself laugh and love with the people who will always be there to remind of this beautiful trip.Â
