One of the most well-known events at SJU is the Appalachian Experience, or APEX. APEX is a weeklong service trip that sends over 500 students all across the Appalachian mountains during the week of spring break. APEX is a fantastic experience and here are 5 reasons you should do it next year!
1) You get to meet and connect with everyone in your group.
Listen, traveling X amount of hours in a small van with a bunch of strangers bonds you together really quickly. Plus, the work you do as a group will connect you in more ways than one.
2) You get to see a new place
The Appalachian mountain range is vast and you never know where APEX will take you! Here is Jonesville, VA!
3) You learn more about yourself
As cliche as it sounds, going to serve people everyday for a week helps you learn more about who you are as a person. Why you do the things you do, and how you want to improve upon yourself.
4) You can find out new skills you never knew you had!
You never know what you will be tasked with at APEX so come prepared to try your hand at a bunch of new tasks. From building roofs, digging holes, painting, and much more!
5) You can learn and understand new perspectives
It can be difficult to experience and learn about new perspectives if you stay in the same place for a long amount of time (ie campus). APEX allows you the opportunity to not only burst out of the SJU bubble, but the Philadelphia bubble as well.
