Top 10 Must-Watch Movies For The Holiday Season

As the autumn breeze leaves and the winter cold comes, the time for holiday cheer is here. Now that it’s December, what better than to enjoy the holiday spirit than to sit by the fireplace (or TV in this case) with a mug of hot chocolate and watch some movies with the family. I can’t write down all the Christmas movies in a single article, but here are a few that I think are definitely worth watching this Christmas!

Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone is a classic when it comes to Christmas movies. The famous movie is about a kid named Kevin trying to protect his family home from con men after his parents accidentally left without him. It’s nice to see a kid try and defend what he loves, although the parents weren’t all that responsible. This movie also has three sequels, but the first one is a classic for a reason!

A Santa Clause (1994)

Out of all the Christmas movies I’ve watched, this is the one that has stayed in my memories. It’s hard to forget a film where the main character has to become the new Santa Claus and take over the North Pole before next Christmas. It’s a must-watch for getting into the holiday spirit! Honestly, though, it’s better to watch it and see for yourself how cool of a movie this is.

Rise of the Guardians (2012)

The story of Jack Frost takes a different turn, and he’s not the villain this time around. Who doesn’t want a Guardian to protect the fun in the world? All we have to do is believe. This movie also gives you a brand new perspective on Jack Frost, making you question all those other stories about Jack Frost being the villain. It features Chris Pine as the voice of Jack Frost and Hugh Jackman as the voice of the Easter Bunny.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

Although there are various versions of this story, you can’t forget the 1966 TV special. When I first watched that movie, my heart grew three sizes. Nobody wants to be a Grinch for Christmas, so be sure to watch this movie to get into the holiday spirit!

Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009)

This movie is probably one of the first Christmas movies I’ve watched. I was excited to read the original version by Charles Dickens in high school because of it. The Christmas spirit flows through everyone, even if some people need to be reminded. So don’t be a scrooge this Christmas and invite family and friends to watch with you!

The Polar Express (2004)

While not as popular or well-known as others on the list, The Polar Express is unique. I remember watching it and hoping for a train to bring me to the North Pole to see Santa and his elves. A little believing can go a long way, so best get believing!

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

The creators of the famous Peanuts comic strip seem to have a movie for every holiday, including Christmas. This movie is so heartwarming and wholesome; I have to include it.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)

You might have heard the name Rudolph tossed around during the holiday season. The red-nosed hero is a household name during the holidays as the most famous reindeer of all. What better way to see it in action than in the 1964 TV special? It’ll bring some light to your Christmas Eve.

Frosty the Snowman (1969)

Speaking of household names, in no way can we forget the iconic snowman himself, Frosty. Our lovely snowman friend comes to life from a magic hat and promises to come back every Christmas. Make sure to watch this movie before the snow melts!

Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town (1970)

I had to involve the story involving the jolly red man himself. Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town shows the history of Kris Kringle. The origin of the legend makes for a beautiful movie for adults and children alike to enjoy. After all, he is the main star of the holiday.

There are more movies to be added to this list, but these are a good start. Naughty or nice, it’s nice to spread a little Christmas cheer by relaxing and watching a couple of films with the family. I am a Journalism major at SJSU. I fell in love with it and I hope to travel the world to learn new things and meet new people. I hope one day to have my works published for the world to see. In my free time, I like listening to music while I scroll aimlessly through social media or talking to my friends.
