Being a part of the higher education industry can be fearful. Stepping into a university/college filled with thousands of students can be scary. Experiencing things like isolation, homesickness, learning how to balance your schedule and feeling like you don’t have a connection with the university are problems first-year college students face. In order to overcome your first year of college, here are five useful tips that will help you enjoy it more.

1. Join clubs of interest: Clubs on college campuses are a huge part of your college experience and can help build your social skills. Whether you join clubs that have to do with your major or not, these essentially become a part of you and look great for future references.

2. Your agenda is the key to your success: Having an agenda on you at all times is a useful tool as you enter the college world. Classes, homework, exams and the start of your social and professional career can make life hectic. Therefore having an agenda is a great start to setting up appointments, tasks, meetings and much more things that college will throw at you.

3. Find a support system that cares about your education: It is easy to surround yourself with people who influence you negatively and distract you from your academics. Find a support system in college that can be a group of friends or a center that shares the same cultural background as you. This could help you navigate your educational path more effectively and could help you network.

4. Networking can help connect with others: Networking is a huge and important part of the college journey and can help you connect to more developed leaders whom you may work for or obtain help. Connecting with peers with similar goals and aspirations is beneficial for your educational path and what you may want to focus on in the future.

5. Remember why you are there and have fun: Remembering where you came from and grounding yourself is key to your college success. Having fun and engaging in events can be a great way to detach yourself from your academics.

These five tips can help you navigate college and can help create new relationships. By understanding and balancing your academic, social and personal life, college can become a much easier journey.
