In just a month, the city of San Jose will be holding its 2022 Mayoral election. As a result of term limitations, the current mayor, Sam Liccardo, is stepping down, with multiple candidates eyeing his position. San Jose uses a top-two primary system. If no candidate wins the majority on June 7th, then a runoff will be held on November 8th, amongst the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation.

There are currently four candidates leading this race: Cindy Chavez, Dev Davis, Matt Mahan and Raul Peralez.

In all elections, it’s necessary to know your candidates and vote for the individual who best aligns with your views and will better your community.

Cindy Chavez

Chavez (Democrat) is currently President of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Her views consist of an increase in police officers and mental facilities. Her solution to San Jose’s most pressing matter, homelessness, is to solve it at its roots and rehouse the homeless.

Chavez has been endorsed by Congressman Ro Khanna. To learn more about her platform visit https://www.cindychavezformayor.com/.

Dev Davis

Davis (independent) is running with the goals to improve public safety and solve homelessness, mental illness and drug abuse. Davis plans include an increase in police officers and fully staffed fire stations. As for homelessness, she aims to take a “tough love” persona on unauthorized encampment areas.

Matt Mahan

Mahan (Democrat) has recently taken a seat at San Jose’s city council. Mahan has created a step-by-step plan to combat homelessness. Like the other candidates, Mahan has a firm stand on unauthorized encampment. His goals also include lowering the cost of housing and expanding programs that pay the homeless to clean up the streets.

Raul Peralez

Peralez (Democrat), a San Jose council member, has prioritized homelessness in his race. To do so, he aims to partner with the County and state to increase mental illness and drug abuse institutes.
