With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many people are focused on turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and travel. This year, I decided to add something new to the holiday: running my first 5k.
What started as a small personal challenge has transformed into a routine that has changed how I feel in my body, boosted my confidence, and influenced how I approach goals.
I began training a couple of months ago, with one simple goal: finish a 5k without stopping. At the time, I was running only short distances and hadn’t engaged in any real endurance training in years. I wanted to push myself physically and mentally. I committed to gradually increasing my mileage week by week.
My routine now includes running two to three times a week, typically covering one to three miles each time. On days when running feels challenging, I remind myself of how far I’ve come. The first mile used to leave me feeling exhausted, but now it feels like a warm-up.
I’ve also added one day of strength training each week, which has helped me feel more powerful and stable when I run.
The biggest changes I’ve experienced weren’t just physical; they were functional as well. My runs have started to feel smoother, my endurance has increased, and I’ve noticed real strength building in my legs and core. This journey has shown me that progress can be subtle but powerful.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I feel both nerves and excitement. Running this 5k isn’t just about crossing the finish line; it’s about proving to myself that I can set a goal, stay consistent, and push through the days when motivation wanes.
Regardless of whether I end up sprinting or jogging slowly across the finish line, I know one thing for sure: this journey has already been worth it. After the race, I will be celebrating with a full plate of Thanksgiving food, guilt-free and proud.
