Little Miss Intern: Where to start?

Finding an internship as a student can feel like navigating a maze of emotions from excitement to overwhelming to full of possibilities all at once. With many companies, startups, and endless opportunities all around at once, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed especially with little to no experience.

For most students, the search starts with figuring out what they actually want to explore. You don’t need a perfectly mapped out career plan but it helps to pay attention to the classes you enjoy, the topics you find yourself returning to, and the kinds of work environments you imagine yourself thriving in.

Even having a general direction, such as majoring in communication, tech, design, marketing, journalism, or art, can narrow your search.

One of the most overlooked resources is our very own campus. Schools like San Jose State University and community colleges across San Jose have career centers that are built to help students succeed, yet many never step inside.

These offices offer resume and cover letter support, interview practice, job search tools, and most importantly, direct connections with employers who want to hire students. A 20-minute meeting can save hours of confusion later on.

Living in San Jose means you are surrounded by opportunities that go far beyond campus. While tech companies are the most visible, the region has countless nonprofits, journalism outlets, arts organizations, city programs, and small businesses that regularly bring on student interns.

Before applying, however, it might be best to take a moment to check your online presence. Employers almost always look up applicants, and a clean, updated LinkedIn profile can help you stand out before you even speak to anyone.

If your major benefits from it, consider updating your current resume by including courses or clubs you’ve participated in your online portfolio with writing samples, design projects, or class assignments that show what you’re capable of.

When it comes to job openings, the key is consistency. Internships often get posted months before the semester begins, so it helps to check platforms like LinkedIn, Handshake, and Indeed regularly.

Instead of waiting for the “perfect” role, apply to a range of positions that interest you-even if you’re not sure you’re 100% qualified. Skills from part-time jobs, group projects, campus involvement, and volunteer work can all translate to a job application more than you think.

Networking is another factor students should keep in mind. Networking doesn’t mean facing awkward conversations with strangers. Start simple: ask professors if they know of any opportunities, talk to classmates about where they’ve applied, or attend a campus event or career fair.

Most internships come from small connections, not just through applications.

If you get an interview, practice your interview skills. Whether in person, on a phone call, or over Zoom, take time to practice. Consider what roles interest you, how your background fits the organization, and examples of times you communicated well, solved a problem, or worked on a team. Confidence comes from preparation, not perfection.

Finally, don’t get discouraged if the first few applications don’t lead anywhere. Rejection is part of the process, and every attempt teaches you something. What matters is that you keep going, keep refining your materials, and stay open to opportunities you might not have considered at first.

Internships are more than resume builders, they’re a chance to learn about yourself, discover new interests, and start building the career you want. In a city as dynamic and diverse as San Jose, the opportunities are readily available.

With the right mindset and a little persistence, you can absolutely find an internship that benefits you in moving toward your career.
