How to Celebrate Halloween in a Long-Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

Halloween is such an exhilarating holiday everyone looks forward to celebrating. From getting to dress up in a unique costume to eating all of the candy your stomach will allow, this day cannot get better! Although this is a very happy time for most people, there are some who are thinking about the fact that they won’t be able to spend this day with their significant other (S/O). My boyfriend lives in another state which is why hanging out together on Halloween is out of the question. There are still several ways to enjoy the day even if we are apart. As unfortunate as the circumstances are, I have some ideas that can still make Halloween an exciting time for you and your partner. Being physically separated doesn’t have to stop you and your S/O from spending a nice Halloween together. I hope that these ideas contribute to a fun-filled day!

  1. Couples costume!

After all, Halloween is all about dressing up! You can still do a couples costume even if you’re apart. While you may be going to different events or plans that night, you can still coordinate your costumes. There are a variety of iconic duos that you and your S/O can recreate. Some of the most popular are Disney prince and princess, Danny and Sandy from Grease, Bugs Bunny and Lola from Space Jam, and so much more! Have some fun with dressing up, even if your person can’t be there with you. You can still take photos on facetime and get ready for the night together!

  1. Halloween movie night!

Doing a movie night virtually is just as fun as doing it in person! You can watch Halloween episodes of your favorite TV shows as well. There are many ways to watch movies or shows in sync when you and your S/O are apart, such as Netflix Party, Hulu Watch Party, etc. Even if you do not have access to those streaming services, you and your partner can still sync up any TV show or movie to watch together! You both can get your favorite snacks and have a chill movie night with each other.

  1. Facetime Halloween baking!

One of my favorite activities to do with my friends, family, and boyfriend is baking. Getting to bake and decorate some cute Halloween desserts would be so fun, even if it’s done virtually! I did cookie decorating with my family last year over zoom and I had so much fun. You and your S/O can bake several different treats together, such as cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and more. You can get frosting and cookie cutters to make the desserts into fun Halloween shapes and decorate!

  1. Spooky basket packages!

One of my favorite things to do with my boyfriend and my friends is giving each other spooky baskets. Even if you and your partner are separated by distance, it is still possible to spoil each other this Halloween. You can send your partner a spooky basket package with all of their favorite candies and other fun Halloween goodies such as socks, a mug, a mini pumpkin, Fall themed decorations, and anything else that they would like! They can send one right back to you as well, and it could be fun to open them up together on FaceTime.

  1. Virtual pumpkin carving or decorating!

Another activity that can be fun doing virtually is pumpkin carving or decorating with your S/O! You can both go get pumpkins of any size, some pumpkin carving tools, and some fun decorations to make your own customized pumpkins. It would be so much fun to do this on facetime and watch your partner either succeed or struggle with their creation. If you aren’t into carving or want to do something with a smaller pumpkin, you can paint them! You could also get stickers and other cute decorations for your pumpkin to help you get creative. I’ve always enjoyed pumpkin carving and decorating, and I think Halloween would be such a good time to do this with your favorite person!

  1. Virtual haunted house!

Sometimes, getting scared can be really fun. Going through a haunted house in person can be terrifying in the best way. Getting to go through a haunted house virtually with your partner can be just as horrifying and fun as it would be in person. There are several different haunted houses to tour online, such as the Winchester Mystery House which is located in San Jose. Having a haunted house to explore from the comfort of your own home can be exhilarating. Many fun memories can be made with your partner through participating in this activity together!

I hope that you and your partner are just as excited for Halloween as I am! Halloween should be a very enjoyable holiday, so make sure to take advantage of the day even if your partner can’t be with you. You both can still have fun with your friends and family who may be physically closer, but there are also ways to have a good time with your person. There are many things to look forward to even without the presence of your S/O, such as dressing up, going out with friends, eating candy, and so much more! Even if this is a holiday you are going to have to spend away from each other, I hope that Halloween is just as enjoyable, especially if you end up trying the ideas that I provided.
