Better Safe than Sorry: Tips to Stay Alert in Downtown San Jose

The semester is coming to an end, which marks the start of the holiday season and also daylight savings.

With the days ending earlier and the nights getting darker, it is important that we as college students are staying aware on and off our campuses, especially when finals calls for late night study-sessions and lonelier walks home.

In San Jose specifically, the issue of campus safety has been a continuing concern. More so as women, our luck is even slimmer. Here are some trust tips to stay alert and aware, from a late hot-girl-walk to a scavenge for a dinner spot off campus.

Never Stroll Alone!

My number one tip for any college student is to always practice the buddy system! Whether you are coming from a late night class or need to head back from the inconveniently-located library, it never hurts to bring a friend on your way home.

Many schools like San Jose State also offer the option of a police escort or ride to housing buildings and other on campus areas, which is especially helpful at night when our commuter school is more secluded than ever.

This tip will keep you less paranoid and assure your safety above anything else.

Apparently location stalking can actually be helpful at times? If you’re the friend with all the Find My indefinite locations, this tip’s for you. Keeping track of your girls as they stroll the streets or are walking home from a party is key to everyone’s sanity.

Sometimes it’s difficult for us to be physically there to give company, but making sure your bestie is taking the normal way back to her dorm will make everyone’s life feel more comfortable.

Spatial Awareness Final Boss

Stay aware of your surroundings! Maybe you’re taking a study break at San Pedro Square or grabbing a coffee at Nirvana Soul.

Regardless of the time of day, it is essential that we as women know exactly where we are and what is around us. Know the crowd, the street names, and how far you are from your home base.

A Little Self Defense Doesn’t Hurt Nobody!

Did you know that pepper spray is legal in California over the age of 18? A trusty bedazzled can on your keys is an important self defense tool. Oftentimes, you won’t need it.

In the case that you do feel unsafe, however, pepper spray in your hand will help you brave through those longer and later walks. Be sure to only use it when necessary, usually it’s not.

Daylight savings brings both our motivation and comfort levels down. Have no fear, there are more than enough ways to enjoy our days and nights while staying safe!

Make sure to always stay with a circle and practice the tips above to ensure you’re focusing on the fun of Silicon Valley!
