Expression is defined as “something that manifests, embodies, or symbolizes something”, according to Merriam-Webster. Seeing this definition, it is clear to see that the Bay Area art scene practices no less than absolute freedom of expression.

With the appraisal of all art forms, there is no question of the constant flow of new creatives in Northern California. The rich art community housed in the Bay always brings refreshing takes on art, fashion and music. Although there are countless exhibits known and exclusive to the Bay, its underground art scenes are a new venture.

The Underground Art Scene

Lucky enough for art lovers, these exhibits’ hidden canvases and sets are scattered all over the Bay. Some of these spots are hidden from the public to help keep art preserved and create a safe space for artists to roam with creative freedom.

One of these mysterious spots includes the Tunnel of Hidden Art in San Francisco. This ethereal space is sacred to mainly graffiti artists steadily transforming their extraordinary imaginations onto vast somber tunnel walls.

Scott Finn has recorded the evolving art in desolate places like the Tunnel of Hidden Art. Finn has reverently expressed that although some of these tunnels are open to the public, it is imperative for these artists to keep their art from being exploited and instead keep their space respected.

Another spot native to underground San Jose artistry is Local Color. This unique non-profit art exhibit was also created and empowered by a diverse panel of women working to engage and employ local artists to showcase their talent.

Local Color also works to create an equitable and welcoming environment for laborers and admirers of art alike. They offer a public space for underground artists to display their work in their exhibits.

The exhibit utilizes public funding to constantly showcase new art to the community. The exhibit’s message is to bring awareness to the need for art advocacy no matter race, sexual orientation, neurological & physical disabilities, religion and more.

From historic theater to design space, Gray Area has started to develop the cohesion of art and technology. Originating in San Francisco, Gray Area is taking an all-inclusive approach to the different design styles of Bay Area culture. Combined with the lustrous creative flair and tech culture of Northern California.

This non-profit organization offers a refreshing engagement of two different expressions to engage creatives in new immersive experiences.

Anomaly Art of Tradition

These distinctive artistic spaces have helped house hundreds of innovators. These unique grounds allow for not only up and coming artists but also a space for the community to appreciate growing art forms.

It is said that traditionalism is contrary to the artist’s psyche. The vast artistic disciplines (like those above) have continued to inspire and hold the value of art here in the Bay Area close to heart.
