10 Concert Tips from a Certified Concert Attendee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

Music is one of the best ways to connect with people. It’s a perfect way to be open and personal with the people you love. Thus, hearing the music live makes it all the better!

Here’s how to have the best concert experience:

1. Figure out transportation

You should know exactly how you are getting to the concert and how you will be leaving it prior to the show date. Whether it’s public transportation, driving, or Uber, you should always have a plan beforehand to ensure smooth traveling.

2. Arrive an hour or two before the show

Arriving early can save you the hassle of getting stuck in traffic or missing out on opportunities. Being late can also cost you a bad view of the stage which would be a waste of money (especially if you are short).

3. Bring different payment methods: card and cash

Concerts typically have merch and food stands that sometimes only take cards or cash, so you want to be prepared for any method of payment thrown at you. You might want to do something after the concert that would need some money as well, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

4. Use the buddy system

Depending on the venue, phone service can be unreliable, making it hard to reach your concert buddy; it’s important to accompany them wherever. Being lost at a concert can definitely jeopardize the experience. Additionally, people at shows can be sketchy, so it’s important to make sure you’re safe by sticking with your buddy. Comfort is also a plus!

5. Have a fully charged phone/portable charger

In this day in age, we need our phones at a concert. Of course, you want to capture some memories, but you may also need it for payment methods, transportation, and communication. Bringing a portable charger to ensure phone battery is always a good strategy.

6. Dress confidently

You want to feel your best by looking your best! Plan an outfit that will make you feel comfortable dancing and singing your heart out all night. Bonus points if it’s on theme and coordinated with your buddy/buddies!

7. Keep a friendly attitude

Concerts are a great way to meet new people and start potential friendships. Having an open mind and positive attitude can welcome experiences during and long after the concert. Being social always has its rewards!

8. Indulge responsibly

Know your limits when partaking in alcohol or other substances. It can be very dangerous to blackout, so it’s important to stay balanced. Going overboard will definitely ruin your experience and those around you. Prioritize your health.

9. Sign up for verified presale/access codes

Lots of artists will allow their fans to purchase tickets and merchandise before the general public with a verified access code. This ensures that the prices will stay at face value and be fairly distributed. Be on the lookout for when artists announce registration dates and keep track of their sale times!

10. Be yourself

Don’t be embarrassed to have fun. Everyone at the concert shares a love for the music, so go all out. Sing, scream, cry, and dance as much as you desire because you can.

Concerts are truly my happy place, and I hope they can be yours as well. Hearing the music you love directly from the artist is truly an awakening experience.

My last piece of advice would be to take the risk. Nine times out of ten, the concert will be worth it, so don’t miss out. We only live once!
