It’s February and Valentine’s Day is coming up! Although some might hate the idea, and not want to see all the lovey dovey stuff happening around them, it is also a good excuse to make special time for you and your close friends to hang out and have fun in the spirit of the low-key Capitalist holiday. But we also totally understand where the students are coming from, and we want to give some ‘easy on the wallet’ ideas for you and your close ones to do with each other.

Try out a new workout experience with your besties

Living in the city allows us to have easier access to new and exciting workout trends and gyms. Most workout places or gyms let newbies try out their workouts either for free or for a cheaper price than it would have originally cost. Corepower Yoga has a free first week unlimited, The Handle Bar has a $10 first class, EveryBodyFights’ first class is free, and more if you just do a quick Google search.

Take advantage of what your college has to offer you

Luckily enough, we also are in a group called the Colleges of The Fenway that allows us to have more events than if we were just ourselves. There was a COF sponsored ice skating night that made ice skating very cheap for COF students. There were also two ski trips that were very cheap to COF students that included almost everything you would need to have fun with your friends. Even discounted tickets to the movies or aquarium can be fun to use.

Make a nice, quick and easy meal with your friends

Pick a night to stay in your dorm or apartment, have people pick up some groceries or make a date out of grocery shopping and then make something fun. It could be a nice pizza making night, cookie making night, whatever your stomach is desiring that day.

Stay in and make a little movie date night in

Gather your friend’s for a movie night and snacks! Bake some cookies and curl-up with some fuzzy blankets and a rom-com. If you need ideas check out the article, “The Ultimate Movie List for Valentine’s Day”!

Paint some pottery

It’s been a while since I have been able to go to those paint your own pottery places, and I recently discovered The Clayroom in Brookline that has half off Monday specials, so it would be super new, fun, and cheap to go there with your friends and make a gift for either yourself or each other.

Max Brenner

Max Brenner is a chocolatier and restaurant located right in the Back Bay of Boston. From fondue to dessert pizza, there is something for everyone. So grab your besties and head out for a night on the town! I highly recommend the fondue, as it’s delicious and great for sharing!

Local Museums

If you and your friends are looking for a more unique activity, check out the local museums! Currently, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is showing the “Love is Calling” Exhibit by Yayoi Kusama. Located right in the Seaport District, this exhibit features vibrant, life-size sculptures (which are totally instagrammable I might add). Tickets to the exhibit are selling out fast, so get them before they’re gone! The ICA also offers free admission on Thursday nights from 5-9 pm. The Museum of Fine Arts also offers free admission for students with a Simmon’s ID!

Hi! I'm a third-year biochemistry major here at Simmons, with dreams of becoming the next Meredith Grey! When I'm not studying, I enjoy playing field hockey, hanging out with friends, and exploring the city!
