How to (Hopefully) Gain a Friend in One Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Simmons chapter.

Freshman year of college is stressful enough as you adjust to hard classes, being on your own, and college life. Finding the right kinds of friends can make all the difference in the world your first year. For most people, this is the first time they are truly on their own, and friends are very important. I hope this article helps you choose the right group of friends so that you can enjoy the best four years of your life! So, let’s dig in on how to find the right people!!

I believe there are about three core people in a group of “gal-pals”; the friend who pushes you to be your best, the outgoing friend and the funny friend. Every group of friends has their own variations of these, but this is just a starting point.

The friend who pushes you to be your best is the one who has good grades, is organized and always on top of everything. This friend is someone who not only makes you sit down and study but who also wants to make sure you’re studying the right concepts, and even helps you handle your course load. This friend is usually the organized one who wants to plan friend dinners and outings too!

The next friend is the outgoing friend. They’re the ones who push their friends to make the most of life, have fun, and even enjoy the occasional “Thirsty Thursday.” Not just that, but they always have a fun plan for the entire weekend! This friend is such an important part of a friend group- It’s so easy to get lost in your homework or not want to explore new experiences, but usually this outgoing friend pushes the others to try new things and go out and meet new people. Living life to the fullest, they keep things exciting and make sure your years are spent at uni with no “ragretz”.

The funny friend is the equivalent to the “comedic relief” character in every movie. Life can get so serious or sad sometimes, and this friend usually has a bubbly, upbeat personality to make your day better. This is the friend who can put a smile on anyone’s face, regardless of how awful they may have done on that chem test. They’re also the person who can cheer you up when you’re stuck with nothing to do on a Saturday night. It happens, and this friend knows how to make the worst night into a memorable one.

Regardless of whether you fit into one, two, or all of these archetypes, it is just a quick look into just some of the types of people you’ll want to surround yourself with in college.

I’ll leave you with my favorite quote and something to always consider when dealing with people you like, but especially those you don’t, “When you realize that no one really knows what they are doing and that everyone is doing the best they can according to their own level of consciousness, life gets a lot easier.” -Bruno Cavaleiro

Best of luck for your first year, go make the best of it!
