10 Spooktacular Movies to Watch in October!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Simmons chapter.

The month of October brings many delights. There are the changing leaves perfect for any Instagram photoshoot, the return of cozy sweaters and the overwhelming scent of pumpkin spice. However, arguably one of my favorite October activities is the return of the familiar Halloween themed movies we all know and love. So in preparation of the spookiest of night of the year, here is my list of must watch Halloween films.

#10 Halloweentown (1998)

Follow Marnie and her siblings on a journey to Halloweentown (1998) after discovering their descended from witches. This film features amazing stars, like the late Debbie Reynolds, and has led to amazing sequels like Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001) and Halloweentown High (2004)

Note: Return to Halloweentown (2006) is not considered an amazing sequel

#9 Casper (1995)

Another film fondly remembered by 90s kids is Casper (1995). Based on the comic and animated series from 1945, Casper the Friendly Ghost, this reinterpretation of a children’s classic features famous names like Christina Ricci.

#8 Ghostbusters (1984)

Casper is not the only ghost you should try to catch this fall. Ghostbusters (1984) is an 80s classic, featuring comedy legends like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harlod Ramis. When Ghosts have taken over your life, who are you gonna call?

#7 Twitches (2005)

Another Disney channel classic is Twitches (2005)! Imagine turning twenty-one and not only finding out you have a twin sister, but that your both witches. Tia and Tamera Mowery, once again prove they are sister goals in a film that features both magic and some killer fashion.

#6 The Addams Family (1991)

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky”–it’s one of television’s favorite families on the big screen. The Addams Family has been reimagined many times, most recently in the new cartoon The Addams Family (2019). However, undoubtedly one of the best interpretations is presented in the (1991) film. The amazing cast includes acting greats like Christopher LIoyd, Angelica Huston and Christina Ricci to bring life to this undead family.

# 5 Hocus Pocus (1993)

If you’re interested in a more local film, then you should watch Hocus Pocus (1993). The Sanderson Sisters are squad goals, played by movie legends Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Watch as this coven of witches wreaks havoc in Salem after accidentally being released by siblings Max and Dani. if you want to experience this adventure for yourself, travel to Salem, Massachusetts and walk the streets where this Disney classic was filmed.

# 4 Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

“Let’s Do the Time Warp Again!” Whether you are seeing a live production or watching the film, October is not complete without Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)! This musical comedy is another imaginative retelling of Frankenstein, but with catchy tunes, aliens and Drag. What more is there to want?

# 3 Halloween (1978)

Watch a film which terrified your parents but makes you laugh. Halloween (1978) is often considered one of the best horror films of all time and has gained a cult following. Audiences may not react to Michael Meyers like they used to, but it is still a must see every Halloween season.

# 2 Young Frankenstein (1974)

Travel back in time and watch Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) follow his family legacy. Young Frankenstein is full of Hijinks and slapstick humor, making it one of the most enjoyable and quotable Halloween films. “It’s Alive!”

# 1 It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966)

What better way to prepare for Halloween then by being transported back to your childhood! The question of whether or not the Great Pumpkin exists has filled the imagination of children for generations. Celebrate Halloween with Snoopy and the Peanuts gang in this film based on the beloved comic by Charlez M Schulz.
