Stepping out of your comfort zone is important for expanding your knowledge about yourself and about the world around you. By doing this, you may meet new people or learn a new skill that will be valuable for your life.

I went abroad for a semester, and it was the most terrifying thing I have ever done. It is also one of the most amazing things I have ever done. It’s important to step out of that comfort zone you’re so used to being in. You get so comfortable in your routine you do every day, and you say to yourself: this is fine, I don’t want to change. It’s because you’re scared of stepping out, but once you take that step, you’ll never regret it.

Once I left my comfort zone, I found that it really wasn’t all that scary once I left. My brain was screaming at me to turn around, don’t do it. When I did it though, I realized that it was all in my head, and in fact, there was nothing scary about it. Going abroad for me was just like going to college again. There are all these opportunities that are available for you. Things you may really like that you would never do otherwise.

Going abroad was my first step. Going to a meet and greet and meeting brand new people was my second step. I wasn’t going to go to this specific meet and greet because I was scared. I was scared of what these new people would think of me, what if they didn’t like me? I made a last minute decision and decided to show up. I walked in, saw new people, and walked out. I walked in and out a couple times before I got the courage to walk up to the table and say, “Is this where the meet and greet is?” I was greeted with smiles and I knew I made a good choice. I met my best friends from this meeting. So, the moral is, if you have a chance to step out of your comfort zone, do it. You won’t regret it.

Not only do you learn more about yourself, but you learn more about the world around you. You hear different stories or maybe different sides of stories. For example, when I left America, I heard a new side of opinions about America and I realized how fascinating Americans seemed to be to other countries. I learned that although America is nowhere near perfect, other places like the United Kingdom are also nowhere near perfect. In my mind, now I know that we aren’t the only country that makes mistakes, whereas before I thought that.

It’s important to learn more about yourself and others by stepping out of your comfort zone. I promise you won’t regret it.
